precision 690 power supply

There is an option for a 1KW power supply for the 690 work station.
Dell says you need this to run dual sli video cards.  Is this true?  Do they use different
motherboards?
Thanks, Joe

I've heard that the motherboard is the same.  However, they use a riser to implement the dual graphics.  This configuration requires the 1K power supply to handle the two cards.

Thanks for the response. The cost to order the 1KW is negliable compared to replacing
it at a later time.

So is it fair to say then, that the Precision 690 1KW and the 750 are identical in all aspects with the only exception being the power supply. I'm asking this because I've got a 750, and I'm considering making the jump to the 1KW to possibly run two FX4500's SLI in Dual Monitor configuration.

The chassis may be different.
The 1KW chasis came with the optional graphics card riser.
(NOTE: Graphics riser option covers up 2 PCI-e x8 slot wired as x4 and 1 PCI 32bit/33Mhz slot. Remaining slots are 2 PCI-X 64bit/100MHz and 1 PCI-e x8 slot wired as x4. Option must be ordered at system purchase.)

While I thank you for the post, I spoke with customer service and the Riser board can be ordered, the Dell part number is: XH821, The cost is: $194.95

It does not do you any good since the rear of the case is different on the riser option. It will fit your system but you will not be able to install video cards because the rear opening will be too short.

This is why when I purchase a new computer, I try to plan for future upgrades. My previous computer was a Dimension XPS R450. Its still running fine. Just maxed everything out so I purchased the 690 workstation with 1KW power supply. I can't see me replacing this for 8 to 10 years.

That is also the reason I got the SLI and 1KW option, the web site says you cannot convert to the riser option after purchase so I just spent more. I hope this thing works for that long and by the quality I think it will except maybe the hard drives.
