Hi fink5155,

Welcome to Dell community!

XPS 400 system was offered with Windows XP as operating system. If your computer has Windows XP installed, please refer the following link for instructions to increase the virtual memory: http://dell.to/15R11tP

In addition to that, running diagnostics will rule out hardware failure. Refer the following link for instructions to run Dell 32-bit diagnostics: http://dell.to/15zbj2w

Do let me know the results.

The XPS400/9150 supports a maximum of 4gb of memory, as you probably have a 32-bit system, I would suggest that you first upgrade to 3gb of DDR2 RAM.

You only have 1GB of RAM?

How much free space do you have on the hard drive? If the drive is full and/or hasn't been defragged recently that might limit amount of virtual memory available.
