quad core q6700 in dell e520 desktop?
i have just got recently a dell dimension e520 desktop. i am going to use it for old games to play from early 2000 or so.
i installed windows xp 32 bit
it has 4300 processor 1.86 ghz duo core 2, i installed 8gb of ram only 4 is seen of course. evga geforce 750ti 2gb video card, brand new 650 psu, updated the bios to 2.4.0
i bought off ebay a q6700 quad core processor king build? i installed it with new thermal paste and when i boot it up it sees the new cpu and everything in the diagnostics passed but it gets to the desktop screen and after a couple seconds shuts down and restarts over and over.
i have been using this pc for 2 weeks and it runs great no hiccups but when i put the processor in it randomly shuts down immediately.
i put the old psu in and still there is restarting problems, when i put the old processor in it runs fine again, in fact i am writing this from it now.
i have seen others install a q6700 but none of the post i have read state what the os is? could xp be holding it back? i wont upgrade because this runs old games better then my windows 7 pc with xp mode.
any ideas what i may be doing wrong?

Did you update the BIOS, prior to installing the processor?
Check out the following threads, to see if they can help:

Q6700 uses significantly more power 105W vs 65W and gets quite a bit hotter. Kentsfield Extreme QX6700 uses 130W.
You would need the performance Copper heat sink and a power supply that is EPS12v compliant. On other dells when they do this the power supply goes up from 300W to 350 or 375W minimum. I recommend the EVGA Super Nova 750B1. The shutdown is due to overloading power supply and overheating cpu.

You currently have Dimension E520 E521 5100 and Optiplex 740 745 GX620 Medium Tower (SMT) Part Number MK946 which is aluminum.
What you need is the D9729 - J9761 copper heatpipe version.

I did upgrade my heat sink to dell d9729.
And i installed a powerspec 650 semi modular power supply from microcenter.
Also added a cooling fan on back of case to help pull hot air out.

PowerSpec 650 Watt has insufficient power on the 3.3v/5v rails combined.
The Dell 300W power supply has 150W combined for 3.3v/5v
The power spec has 120W max combined
Power supplies are not single rail with single spec of WATTS.

Does that have the connections i need? Isnt the 12v plug in only 4 prong? This states its 8 prong.
Any way you could find it on microcenter and send that link? I'll go after work and exchange mine for it then.
Thank you!

i just wanted to update a solution i have found working so far.
a couple weeks ago i bought 4gbs of ram at micro center crucial brand, later i order 4 more gbs from Ebay again crucial brand. the micro center ram says made in USA 60$, Ebay says made in china 15$.
i pulled the china ram out and for the last 3 days my PC has been working fine and has not restarted once and it shows my q6700 installed and humming along.
not a big lose as windows XP only sees 3 gb ram anyway.
thanks everyone for there help and tips. fingers crossed this fixed it.
