Is it a USB keyboard? XP should have standard keyboard drivers built in.

If your keyboard came with its own drivers CD, you may need to reload the driver from that disk.

Does the system boot to the desktop and does the keyboard work at all?

If you can get to the desktop, open Device Manager and find the entry for the keyboard. Right-click and Uninstall it. Then reboot. Windows should see "new hardware" and install a keyboard driver.

The driver cache may be corrupted. Try deleting the %windir%\Windows\INF\INFCACHE.1 file and rebooted. INFCACHE.1 lists the location of drivers and their respective INF files, and deleting it will force Windows to rebuild it on boot-up. 'windir' is the path to your Windows folder, and is typically C:\Windows.

Hi, Ron,

Thanks for responding.
I was able to do what you suggested.
It didn't work, but the number lock lit up on the keyboard--formerly it wasn't lit up.
I got a brief notice saying my computer was searching for the new hardware-- or that the new hardware was searching for a way to connect. The message was only there briefly.
I'm wondering what else might work.
