uncached disc speed

Question

i have run the full tests at pc pit stop and my machine comes through with flying colors except the uncached disc speed. It shows only 2.42 mbs where the average should be 4.3 mbs. I have a xps600t, 512 mb ram, ge force3 card, sb live audio, 20 gig hard drive which is showing 7.49 gig free.I am usuall in the 70's for system resources. When I ran this the other day it was fine. I tried scandisc and defrag and it still shows this critical error, any help would be greatly appreciated! Message Edited on 02/21/02 01:28PM by so2315

* Make sure you have disk caching check in device manager.
* Note that NTFS is slower than FAT32
* Disable any virus scan and exit any resource hogging programs running in the background (check in task manager). These may be any/all your firewall, direct cd, dellmmkb, etc. If "system idle process" isn't in the high 90% you have a resource hogging program running.
* repeat the test.

Where is the disc caching check located at in device manager? I am running fat 32 i believe, it is a clean install of win 98 on reformat. Thanks!

In device manager select and expand 'disk drives' and you should see each drive on your machine listed. Double click on the drive and select the disk properties (may be adv properties -- depends on OS). There should be a check box or a couple check boxes to enable write caching. Will need to reboot.
