upgrade power supply for Dimension 4700C?

I've been asked to check out a Dimension 4700C whose fans have been complaining. I notice that the CPU's nominal power drain is 135 W, while the power supply is rated at160 W. The owner has been running the machine up near 90 deg F ambient, close to the upper rated 95 deg. I'm wondering if replacing the PU with the 270 W model will stress the system less at this high ambient temperature. Will the heat generated by the 270 w PS running way below capacity offset that of the 160 W unit near capacity? Would a replacement be wortth the added cost (~$160 vs !$40?) Thanks for any suggestions!

Personally, I think that spending $160 on a 270w PSU upgrade, for an obsolete Dimension 4700c, would be better used towards buying a new desktop.

I agree, Bev - But I'm still curious to know if running the 270W PSU further from its rated max. output would be cooler than running the 160W one at near its max. One never knows what will show up on eBay...:emotion-13:

Basically I have no idea, but one would assume that the larger 270w power supply would run cooler than a 160w running at full load.

Maybe another member has a better answer.
