upgrading XPS710 to vista64
I want to upgrade my xps710 to vista64 with 8Gb of ram. I have two questions
Will the xps710 take 8gb, ive currently 4x1gb, want to have 4x2, ive noticed the 2gb memory upgrades are only offered for 720s & 730s on the parts page.
If it will take it does it have to be supplied by Dell, will any memory fit the mobo, or is as with many parts Dell supplied only

You can use memory other than Dell, however Dell's can be finicky with some brands of memory (may work on one PC and not on another). Crucial is one brand that is guaranteed to work with Dell's. According to the Crucial site, 4GB is max on a 710 however the Dell manual says 4GB or 8GB. Usually the Crucial site is correct and as they are in the business of selling memory, I'm sure they would love to sell you 8GB of memory if it would work.
Also, if you want to go to 64bit, make sure there are 64 bit drivers for all of your hardware and peripherals. And, you will have to do a "clean" install (reformat the hard drive and manually install everything), you can't "upgrade" to 64 bit version.

Ive looked at both
The crucial site says this:
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-4200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
The manual says:
If you are using a 64-bit operating system, your computer will support a maximum of 8 GB (2-GB DIMMs in each of the four slots) of memory
The crucial site suggests you can put 8gb in but dell wont support it. The dell manual suggests go ahead
What to do? maybe buy dell and if I have problems demand a refund?
Take onboard what you say about drivers

A 32 bit Operating System can't utilize 8 GB of memory, it's limited because of word size to something less than 4 GB. Vista SP1 will now show the actual memory installed but it still will only utilize something less than 4GB (how much less depends on your video, etc).
