usb hub causes boot to fail
I have a Dell XPST700r with Windows XP home edition installed. I tried to add a Belkin USB 4 port Hub and it seems to work.
However, when the computer is turned off, the Boot process hangs on the "Dell" screen. If you unplug the Hub and restart the computer it boots ok.
Then you have to plug the Hub back in.
Any suggestions to avoid this plugging and unplugging?

Go to the device manager (Control Panel-Systems-Hardware-click on the device manager button). Go down to your USB Controllers files, expand them, check for any red or yellow triangle or exclamation mark next to them, meaning there is a problem, open your hub (they are usually just generic titled 'general purpose USB Hub') properties and check if everything is working OK and there are no conflicts. If OK, unplug everything from your hub, boot up. If it doesn't hang now, plug in each device one at a time and boot up after each one. Once you find the offender, check it's device properties to make sure it is working properly, and has no conflicts. If it continues to hang up even with the hub empty, try plugging the hub into another USB port on your PC. You should be using a self powered hub, I assume you are.

Thanks for the help. After the tests, I believe that I have a defective Hub (Belkin F5U021).
Hopefully, Circuit City will swap me another.
Thanks again,
Arthur

That will be no problem, they should take it right back. I have had both Belkin and Xircom hubs that did nothing but give me grief. I have since been using a D-Link D7 self powered unit that has been totally reliable and never caused issues even plugging in web cams to it.
