Manual for desktop version of the Optiplex 760 only shows 2 SATA ports on the motherboard, one for a hard drive, the other for an optical drive.

If you install a second hard drive, you'll have to disconnect the optical drive.

You may have to use an external USB hard drive, if you want to use the optical drive. Or install a card reader for additional storage

Hello again can I ask please how do you supply the second hard drive with power and is it possible to purchase a device to insert the hard drive into please such as a caddy.

i would like to install a second Sata hard drive into the machine can anyone advise ior direct me to a wiki of how to do this please, I believe the motherboard has an extra SATA point but what about powering up the drive?.

Use a power splitter if there are no free power connectors.

Since you have to disconnect the DVD drive to free up a SATA port, that drive won't need its SATA power connector so you'd just move that cable over to the new hard drive.

You probably need to contact Dell Spare Parts about a drive caddy for that bay. 1-800-357-3355. Have the Service Tag handy when you call.

BTW: If you're disconnecting the DVD drive from motherboard and power supply, maybe you can just remove it completely and then use that drive bay for a second hard drive..??

And I guess you could get a USB DVD drive if you still want to watch and/or burn optical disks...

Thanks for the advice can anyone recommend a caddy which will slot in either the 5.25 drive if I remove the DVD drive ( have no use for that to be honest ) or  a caddy which will fit in the floppy drive bay ( or will the drive just screw into this space pleasem thanks

The flex bay holds a 3.5" floppy drive or card reader using a latch mechanism, so you might be able to install a 3.5" hard drive in there without a caddy or tray. Suggest you review the manual, linked in one of my earlier posts, for details on installing drives. You may have to 'wing' it to put a 3.5" drive in the 5.25" DVD bay.

Using a power splitter isn't necessary. You can use the power connector that's on the DVD drive, since you say you don't need it.
