Apologies if I haven't post this in the right place and if the question has been posed and answered before.

I have a dimension 2400 with SP3 and running windows XP and having had to reinstall windows I am left with a problem.

In device manager I have a yellow question mark next to the following entries

Multimedia Controller

Multimedia Video Controller

PCI Simple Communications Controller

I have tried to rectify this by checking on my Resource CD which is unable to find the drivers.

I have also tried to find them on the Dell drivers download site but to no avail.

If someone with the knowledge could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Regards

They to me look like they form part of your motherboard Chipset driver. Dell drivers are supposed to be installed in order, and your chipset driver is the first driver to be installed. See HERE, and your drivers HERE.

Multimedia Controller

Multimedia Video Controller

PCI Simple Communications Controller

The first two may be your onboard sound and video. I'm not sure about the third, but you can find out by right-clicking it, selecting "Properties" then "Details," and then copying the "PCI/VEN_.." value. The vendor and device IDs can then be looked up at www.pcidatabase.com.

Apologies for the intrusion, I would like to make a few comments.

First, if you are using a Resource CD, did you allow it to install its Application before you proceeded?

If the Application was allowed to install, did you go to the panel on the left and select Dimension 2400 from the list of supported machines?

If both of the steps above were completed successfully, did you then select Drivers from the menu at the top of the Application screen?

If all the above were completed successfully you should have been presented with a list of files, some of them having checkmarks to the left of the file name.  The checkmarked files are those that the application has determined are needed by the computer.  You must install each one at a time by double clicking the file name and clicking the button marked "Open" when it pops up.  When the file is opened, an autoextractor is started and tells you that the file will be installed in C:\Dell\Drivers.  If the directory does not exist, you will be asked if you want the folder to be created.  Click Yes, the folder will be created and the file extracted to that folder.  You should then be asked if you wish to install the file, to which you should click the button to enable that choice.  When the installation has completed you need to restart the computer to properly update the system configuration.  Once the reboot is complete you need to eject the Resource Disk and re-insert it to start the application again.  Select the next file to install.

I believe a previous poster has given you a link to the install order of the drivers.  Ignore the Desktop System Software and begin with the Chipset Driver - there is no Desktop System Software for the Dimension 2400.

Another note is that the PCI Simple Communications Controller is the telephone modem.  The Multimedia Controller may be the sound adapter.
