GX 260 Motherboard

I have a GX260, wanted to know if the motherboard (Dell 02X378) - Chipset Intel i845G supports dual DDR, i.e, I am adding extra RAM and wanted to know if I must do so in pairs to take advantage of Dual DDR? if not then i will simpy add wahtever i want.

OPtiplex 260

The sockets between PC133 and DDR are totally different.
The GX260 uses DDR and it does not interleave memory so you can add 1 stick at a time and it wont complain at you.

Maximum Memory 2GB
Memory Slots 2 (2 banks of 1)

You can use DDR400 ram but it will only run at DDR266 max with the appropriate cpu.
Ive seen systems using PC2100 ram in them.

Thanks SpeedStep,

I think though i may have mixed you up!

I know my computer uses PC2100 RAM, it currently only has 256Mb, I wish to add some more, however (this is the bit I think i didnt explain too well), I want to know if I can mix the size of the RAM I wish to add with what I have. I have read that if the system is "dual channel"  and I want to use this then I must add the same size of RAM that is already in place.

So is my system "dual channel"???

I do not believe it is. From my recollection Ive installed a 128 and a 256 before to get 384. The spec doesnt say anything about ram needing to be installed in pairs.

I did a comparison of the 845 (as your system has) and the 865 (confirmed dual channel) on Intel's site, and it looks like the 845 is indeed single channel (the 865 chipset says it's 2 dimms (per channel) and has 2 channels, where the 845 just says 2 DDR or 3 SDR dimms.

I got a GX260 as well, when I put a 256mb DDR-266 MHz-CL2.5 PC2100 ram into the slot, and switched it on, then there was not respond to the screen which just black and not signal came from the computer. So it just would not boot up. But when I removed the added ram then it back to normal. Pls let me know what's wrong with this ram ?.

Thanks.

That ram is NOT INTEL/Dell COMPATABLE. Not all ram from all makers willy nilly that fits into the socket works.

To find compatible memory for any given system, use Crucial, Kingston or Dell's memory configurators. They'll guide you thru 3 steps (select brand (Dell), product range (Optiplex), and model (GX260)) to show you compatible memory.

These 3 are just some common examples, but they are by no means the only options.
