GX270 Motherboard replacement

It looks like the mobo on my 270 went out, but according to tech support they will only replace it under the extended warranty if the caps are bulging or leaking. I don't think they are, but it's hard to see behind the CPU.
 
Anyway, assuming they won't replace it, I called the parts dept. - They said they don't carry these boards anymore (part # PG605). On their reccommendation, I called Fox Micro in TX, who has the board but they "don't know if they're new or refurbished - they look new". Not exactly confidence inspiring. Ebay has a lot of boards, but they all seem to be the small form factor with only one expansion slot. Mine is the minitower with 4 slots.
 
I guess my questions are:
 
1. What is my best bet for replacing this motherboard?
2. Will XP stop functioning when I install any new board, or will it work as long as it's a Dell?
3. Is there a better board out there that's compatible?
4. What do you think about buying a refurbished board?

1. Try to find a new one if possible
2. If the new mobo has the same chipset, you should be OK
3. Typically Dell mobo's are designed for each model, but sometimes there are others that will fit correctly. Don't know about the 270, sorry.
4. I don't buy anything refurb, never. It is just a term for, "we really don't know anything about this board, where it came from, or if it works". Sure they will give you another one if it is bad, but is it worth the shipping costs, they never cover this.
 
Might be time for an upgrade PC.

Well, I thought about just getting a new one, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me IF I can get a motherboard on the cheap. It's not like I've outgrown the system capabilities or anything, I just need it to work again.
 
So now my problem is finding an appropriate replacement, which means sorting through the mysteries of Dell part numbers.
 
Dell Parts told me I need part number PG605. However, the actual PN on my mobo is U1325. So clearly, those two are interchangeable. Of course, I can't find either new, so I went digging a little deeper on eBay. There I found boards that are for the Optiplex GX270 (tower) and look exactly (as far as I can tell from pictures) like my current board. Here's a list of those part numbers, which I think might be compatible with PG605/U1325:

DG284
H1487
H1290
Y1057
FG015
FG022
FG009
 
Does anyone have any insight into this? Is there some way of determining if these are all interchangeable, or which chipset they use? Do I need to be worried about BIOS or driver compatibility?
 
Right now I'm looking at the U1324 on the childish assumption that the closer the numbers are, the more likely it is to be compatible.

I believe there is a part number hierarchy, U being the newest and F being the oldest of manufacture. I guess that is why Dell recommends the U, last to be manufactured and they have leftovers.

There are very few brand new GX270 mobos so good luck getting a brand new one. All you can find are refurbished ones (which I had 100% success rating with)
 
Parts such as Y1057 and DG284 are for GX270 mobo. If you see part numbers like FG022, it is the entire mobo assembly (with tray and everything). Go on eBay and buy one ... make sure it has the new caps. I bought all my GX270 mobos used/refurb with the new caps and 100% of them worked.
 
I got a sealed, refurb GX270 tower mobo for $35 one time. I think Ebay is a great place to look for a replacement mobo.

I do not know what the part number meanings are either...


P.S. U1324 is for small desktop, U1325 is for small mini tower

PG605 is the part number for a motherboard service kit.
U1324 is for the medium desktop chassis; it won't line up right in your mini-tower.
K5786 is a manufacturing-only part number. Spare Parts can't order it.
DG284 is valid for your configuration.
H1487 is contained within kit P/N PG605.
H1290 is contained within kit P/N W0786.
Y1057 is valid for your configuration.
FG015 is only valid in Europe.
FG022 is valid for your configuration.
FG009 is valid for your configuration.

By the way, is there some kind of documentation that you're drawing from, or do you just have mystical motherboard identification powers?
 
Also, what's included in the motherboard kit (PG605) besides the motherboard?

In my case I've been supporting these systems for almost four years, and by now certain part numbers--PG605 is one of them--are burned into my brain. And yes, I also have access to a tool you can't get access to which lets me see what a particular part's for.





Also, what's included in the motherboard kit (PG605) besides the motherboard?




The BIOS flash CD, a tube of thermal grease, and a sheet explaining how to install it just in case the customer or the onsite tech doesn't already know.

There's a good chance that most of your used systems already had their boards replaced when you got them, in which case it's to be expected they wouldn't give further trouble.
