How to activate XMP for XPS 8700

Hi there,

The desktop (XPS 8700) originally came with 2x4GB (1600MHz) Samsung RAM.

Recently, I added 2x2GB(1600MHz) Kingston HyperX RAM.

I placed the Samsung RAM in slots 2 and 4 while the Kingston RAM in slots 1 and 3.

After that, i did a test using CPU-Z to check the speed for the RAM's. The Samsung RAM's in slot 2 and 4 ran at 800MHz but the Kingston RAM's in slot 1 and 3 only ran at 667 MHz.

I also tried to check the speed of the RAM using Speccy and got the same results and it showed an overall speed of 665 MHz.

The Kingston RAM has a XMP profile which allows it to run at full 1600 MHz.

I tried finding any option in the BIOS to enable the XMP but was not successful.

Is there any way to allow the Kingston RAM to run at 800MHz and make my system run at full 1600MHz?

Also, I have never updated or done anything with my BIOS.

Thanks!

First off, the 667Mhz is really 1333Mhz as it is DDR memory, so it isn't as slow as you might think.

However, as best as I can tell, you cannot access the XMP memory timings from the XPS 8700 BIOS.

There is an alternative: Try using Intel's XTU - Extreme Tuning Utility ( google it, it is on Intel's site).

With XTU I was able to overclock the memory and change subtimings for lower latency. Unfortunately I could not find a way to increase the memory voltage above 1.5V so even though I could change the frequency, I could not keep it stable at 1866 Mhz.

But, I was also to adjust CAS latency and other sub-timings to improve latency.

[SPOILER ALERT] It didn't really help except for encoding tasks.

But if you can get the memory to 1600 Mhz ( or 800 as reported by CPU-Z ) I think you'll notice an improvement.

I'll post in link to my timings and results in a separate post. I find when I post links, my response often gets "moderated" and doesn't show up for a day or so.

here was a thread on another forum where I documented some of the timings and test results.

here are the timings I was able to achieve.

What is the version of that Intel Extreme Tuning Utility? Mine doesn't even show memory. I only see, Core, Cache, and Graphics. I have 6.4.1.11 btw. Thanks
