Looking to upgrade my dell optiplex 780 DT

So I have been doing a lot of research on the dell optiplex 780 just so I don't make any purchases of anything that wouldn't work in my PC. There are four things I am really focused on getting upgraded right away before I do any thing else like the hard drive and that is the CPU, GPU, RAM, and power supply. The CPU I am planning to get is the Intel core2quad q9650. Knowing that this is a power hungry card and seeing how I am going to overclock it, the card will make some heat so I am planning on getting an aftermarket cooler. Seeing how I can't really just slap on a coolermaster and be good to go I want to get this https://www.redplanettrading.com/Dell-RW134-PU469-R6852-C6119-Heatsink-and-Shroud-Optiplex-Desktop.h... I think this would be adequate for overclocking and keeping it cool, but that's where I need the forums to make sure.  The GPU I will be buying a riser card made specifically by dell for the motherboard so that way my dell optiplex 780 DT will support full height cards and I will be getting a GTX 750 ti. The RAM I wont have an issue with just as long as I can find four 2GB sticks of Non-ECC DDR3 RAM running at 1033Mhz and my computer will support the RAM because I have a 64-bit OS and a CPU that will support 64 bit as well. This is where the problem comes in, I don't know what power supply to get. I want to get at least a 400 watt power supply because, even though it's a little overkill with the amount of power, it will be nice to know I wont have any issues in the future if I decide to upgrade again. So what do you guys think? Do you think I should change something? Keep it the same?

You can't do any of what you are talking about.

If you want to upgrade get a precision T3400/T3500 or better.

The Desktop Riser slot is only 1 slot wide so a 750TI wont fit.

The power supply is not upgradeable to 400W

There is no overclocking on a 780.

http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18125for the graphics card I'm going to do some case modification. I don't really know if that will work but I got the computer for $100 so if it doesnt work at least I will have some parts to build a new one.

well you were right about the psu, but it is upgradable to a 305 watt psu that is sold by dell and the serial numbers match and from what I read from dell it will work with the dell optiplex 780.

The 305W unit is only for TOWER.

Does not physically fit into Desktop SFF or USFF case.

What graphics card from 2010 or 2011 could work on a DT version?

I put a Q9400, 8GB of DDR3, and a GTX 460 into an Optiplex 760.

The motherboard is from a 780 SFF ($20 on Amazon), the RAM is just 1333 RAM, and all I did was remove the GPU shroud and cut the PCI bracket. I also painted it, added a custom heatsink assembly, removed the drive cage, and added a Fractal F9 PWM fan.

No errors on startup either.

RE: Looking to upgrade my dell optiplex 780 DT

I've fit things like the GT 1030 and the GTX 1050Ti Low Profile inside small optiplexes. The GT 1030 goes well with a Q9400, one of the fastest CPUs for the 780 SFF, not to mention it's quad core.

Unfortunately, the HD 6450 is extremely weak and isn't capable of anything more than rendering a three-poly potato in Sketchup. Not only that, but it's overpriced to high ***, and for the same price you can get things that are far better, like a used GT 730 or even a low profile GTX 750Ti off of eBay.

<attacking> 90% of the time you can use any graphics card you want, for example, I put a GTX 550Ti in a Dell Optiplex 3010 DT, and later on added a GTX 1050Ti 4GB. The only exceptions I found here are with Ivy/Sandy Bridge Sutdio XPS computers that have a BIOS whitelist of graphics cards - something Dell did and regretted once stock prices dropped for it.

So with the Desk top version, that Radeon is an option? I'm in the UK, so it is a bit pricey, but I guess the age it is now, it won't be too long before it is a lot cheaper.

As for a QT9400, I don't know about that, I found nothing on Amazon UK.
