Motherboard compatibility for CPU upgrade on Dell 530
I currently have a Dell 530 Inspiron with a P35/G33/G31 motherboard model # OFM586 and my CPU is a Kentsfield Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4MHz, 1066FSB LGA 775 Socket, 65nm, 8M Cache, 700W GameXtreme PSU, DDR2 PC6400 Ram 4G......I want to upgrade to a Yorkfield Q9650 Core 2 Quad 3.0MHz, 1333FSB, LGA775 Socket 45nm 12M Cache........Will my MOBO be compatible for this upgrade? And does it matter if the 65nm/45nm technology is different or the 8M to 12M Cache size is not the same either? My research so far leads me to believe that this will work as long as i update my BIOS first. Also, will i notice a big difference in performance and speed with this CPU upgrade?

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 (3.0GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) is compatible with the Inspiron 530, prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher, is installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Thanks for your answer and fast response. My current BIOS version is 1.0.18 so i should be fine. Is it possible to install a Mobo/CPU combo into my Dell 530 that would allow me to put a New Intel i7 2600 or 970 series CPU in? Would the board fit, and work with my existing hard drive, SATA, ect ? I would just upgrade my Ram to 16G DDR3

You won't be able to instal another motherboard, retail, or OEM. As dell systems use propriety motherboards, and your I/O on a retail or other OEM motherboard will not match the case. Also if you use a retail motherboard, then you won't be able to use the dell OS.

It would fit (provided it was microATX), but you'd have to cut out an opening in the back of the chassis for the IO shield. That's the biggest impediment to using a third-party mainboard in the 530, but if you're handing with tinsnips, it can be done.
To clarify regarding the operating system, technically the OEM product key can be used but you would in violation of the OEM license, which considers mainboard swaps for significantly different functionality to be new PCs requiring new licenses. If you're using Vista, it would be a good time to move up to Windows 7, and reputable etailers like Newegg would be happy to sell you an new OEM copy at a discount.

You are welcome and that's one the reasons I went back to building my desktop systems again, they are easier to upgrade.

Some of the Dell chassis can be used for custom projects, but the 530 and 220 are not so suitable. (Now that I remember, they have fixed CPU heatsink mounting bosses, too.)
The B110/1100/2400/3000/4600/4700 chassis has removable heatsink mounting bosses and a removable IO shield and even has a mounting grill on the back for a standard 92mm case fan. :)
