New CPU for my OptiPlex GX270

Um... how about Intel Core?

No Cores ... only Pentium 4 and Celeron D (socket 478, supported by the 865G chipset):

I faced the same problem with one of my kid's computers.   Cost effective upgrades include memory and CPU.  As you are running 32bit XP, only about 3.5GB is usable, so I would add 1GB of ram (should not be that expensive).  CPU upgrades are still available.  I got a 3.0 GHz Socket 478 P4 from www.compuvest.com, and they are still showing them refurbished for under $25.  You should also track down a replacement heatsink capable of working with the faster CPU.  (I thought about faster than 3.0, but it was harder at that time to find a sufficiently capable heatsink.)   I do not know how much difference it would make, but you should also make sure your computer is taking advantage of multi-threading.  If you open the XP Task Manager and go to the Performance tab, the presence of two CPU Usage windows indicates the CPU is multi-threading, otherwise it is not.   We do nothing particularly graphics intensive, so I spent little time upgrading that, but my recollection is that the fast video slot on the Optiplex 270 motherboard was AGP.  Hard drive is pretty simple once the shortage abates, but I think these machines still used IDE rather than SATA drives, but the former are probably still available.   You could probably do everything (maybe including drive) for $125-$150.

i still have a gx270 tower latest bios is A07 yes its IDE plus SATA ,yes its use agp graphics card or a pci full size if could find one.. i shoved a new 550w cit atx psu in i t, 4gb ram , new250gb sata hdd , new dvdrw , new ATI Radeon™ HD3650 512MB AGP Graphics Card,,-overall its very reliable but as previously mentioned its old computer now i could have bought a new one with the money i sank in mine on parts but im attached to it as a 4th pc

The GX270 is made in three different versions, the Small Form-Factor, Small Desktop and Small Mini-Tower models, what is your version?

Intel i7 or i5 and Dual core processors are not supported, you can only install Single core, Socket 478 P4 processors.

The Socket 478, 3.06/533/512k P-4 is the fastest processor you can use for the Optiplex 270.
 
Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS version A07 is installed, when support for newer processors was added.

You would be better advised to place the upgrade money, towards buying a new i5/i7 computer, that would knock the socks of the GX 270.

Don't forget to add the PSU, some of those new components make suck power and the GX270 does not have a very large PSU stock.
