'No audio device" - Dell Dimension 8300
I recently had to update the BIOS and then had WinXP reinstalled the Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection in order to reestablish my Ethernet connection with my network. After doing this, I did not get sound from my speakers. I went to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.
I went into the BIOS to see if the Audio was actually On. It was not. So, I turned it On, rebooted and WinXP detected New Hardware. I ignored the WinXP Hardware Install and inserted the Dell Resource CD: Drivers & Utilities and it seemed to install the driver software. When rebooting I did not get the WinXP Found New Hardware, but there is still no sound and when I got to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me "no audio device". Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.
I attached my Plantronics USB Headphones because it did not require an On-Board sound card and I hoped that at least the headphones might work& they do not work, so I detached them.
I emailed Dell Support yesterday and hoped they would answer quickly. Unfortunately, no return email yet This is truly an inconvenience because I have a voice chat session scheduled for tonight. I would a grateful for help.

First I'd recommend editing out your serial numbers and ID's before a mod deletes your post for your own protection (it's against Terms of Service to post them here).
But, since you did, I was able to "cheat", and I think I know what's going on. Sandra's saying you have a Soundblaster Live PCI card AND integrated audio enabled on that PC. Your PC came originally with the PCI card, which is why the integrated audio built into the motherboard was disabled in the BIOS - it's supposed to be that way. XP can only handle one default audio device at a time, and since you've got both installed it seems it's gotten itself confused.
If you want to use the Soundblaster card, I think you should have a separate CD with drivers and software for it. Uninstall the Soundmax drivers via add/remove, then reboot into BIOS again and disable integrated audio. Then, when XP detects hardware use only the Soundblaster drivers and software.

Unfortunatly. Your advice didn't resolve the entire issue. I did what you said and it worked pecice and without a problem. But when I rebooted there still was no sound and in the Device Manager I clicked view hidden devices. So, I have a dark yellow questionmark by 'other devices' and when I expand 'other devices there is a light yellow questionmark next to the item "multimedia audio controller"
... what now? ... be specific or step by step because I can be pretty dense. I have to go to a meeting for a while, be back later, thanks again.
PS. I can not get screen shots to post her, sorry, wish you could see what I see... it would be easier.

That "hidden device" is probably just the ghost of the integrated audio you disabled - XP "remembers" old devices even when they're disconnected (e.g., unplugged flash drives also show up as hidden devices).
One remote possibility if devices are working but Windows won't detect them: Make sure the Windows Audio Service is Started and Automatic. Right Click My Computer -> Manage -> Services, scroll down to Windows Audio and double-click it.
According to the Dell SB Live instructions, XP is supposed to load a generic driver for the card even before you install the software, so something isn't being detected properly. What's bugging me a little is that Sandra is saying your PCI slots aren't occupied - one of them should be occupied by the SB live card. May be best to back up a ways and try again:
1) Uninstall the Soundblaster via Add/Remove programs
2) Go into Device Manager, and uninstall the hidden multimedia controller, and the Soundblaster driver under Sounds and Audio.
3) Reboot the PC. If you didn't do so after reinstalling XP, install the chipset drivers, either from the resource disk or from the web site. The chipset drivers the motherboard configuration, which may be affecting XP's ability to detect the card.
4) Reboot again. If it's behaving itself, XP should recognize the card and install the generic driver -from there you can use the install CD. Not to sound obnoxious, but remember that you have to choose the default device in Sounds and Audio in the control panel - if it says "Modem 0" you have to change it to Soundblaster.
Now, worst case if you're in a hurry and want to try the integrated audio instead:
1) Turn off the PC, unplug it, hold the power button in for about 20 seconds to release any leftover charge, then open up the case, and remove the Soundblaster card.
2) Reboot and reenable the onboard audio in the BIOS.
3) When XP detects the hardware, install the Soundmax drivers from the Resource CD.
4) Note that integrated audio uses a different set of jacks on the back of the case - they may have been covered up with a piece of plastic.

Hi again. I appretiate you getting back to me ...good timeing, we must be on the same time schedual. ...and,no, I do not think you're sounding obnoxious at all. Actually, I need reminders and explainations.
I uninstalled Soundblaster Live! via Add/Remove Programs and rebooted.
After reboot, Windows detected 3-4 diferend devices and the Install Hardware Wizard started, but I just ignored it and moved onward to the Device Manager to uninstall the "gohst of the 'multimedia audio controller'.
I did not see the 'soundblaster' under Sound, Video and Game Controllers. I did notice something new. The item 'multimedia audio controller' had moved under 'sound, video and game controllers' and it had a dark yellow apostrophy. In addition, under 'other devices' ... "PCI Input Device" with a dark yellow questionmark and apostophy.
So, I stopped. I am not sure ...should move onward or what?

I think it's finally detecting right. You've got both a PCI device and an audio device.
Now pop in the Soundblaster CD and install it.

Images can only be linked from a web site - you'd need to upload it to an image hosting site like Photobucket or Imageshack, then they provide a URL to link to the image. Might be more trouble than it's worth right now.
What I'm wondering is if the Soundblaster device is showing as installed, enabled, and working. If it is, but the control panel is still saying "no audio" even when you set the default devices to Soundblaster, then something in Windows itself isn't quite right.
I posted this earlier but will copy it here: One remote possibility if devices are working but Windows won't detect them: Make sure the Windows Audio Service is Started and Automatic. Right Click My Computer -> Manage -> Services, scroll down to Windows Audio and double-click it to change the settings.
I'm going to do some Googling and see what the options are.

The Soundblast CD installed ok. but I still get no sound... no audie device.
Should I uninstall and try again only install those chip driver thing you were talking about?

No - the chipset drivers have nothing to do with installed programs on your hard drive - they're just hardware drivers like any other driver. Installing them will not change any of your programs or files.
I hate to run off on you, but I've got 2 cats and 1 human who need to be fed. I'll have to check back in the AM....

Oops, should've read more carefully. By all means go back and try installing the chipset drivers. What they do is tell XP how your motherboard is configured - usually if they're not right the device won't install at all, but with PC's you never know. It won't hurt, and it might help.
