Optiplex 745 - System battery voltage is low

" I have noticed that at boot a message comes up saying "System battery voltage is low, press f1 to continue""

I have recently started seeing this message too in the last few days.  Are there any diagnostics that I should be trying before assuming it's a major problem?  I had previously received some messages about something recently installed being incompatible, but I'm not sure what it was referring to so I ignored and cancelled the message...

Hi there,

I've split your thread as it didn't really apply to the one where you posted this issue.

This is more than likely a case that the CMOS battery that is connected to the motherboard has died or is beginning to run out of charge. The quickest way to resolve this is to get hold of a new CR2032 battery and use this to replace the dying battery. CR2032 batteries are very common and can be purchased at most stores that sell batteries.

To do this for your Optiplex 745, please follow these steps: <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

There are 4 different form factors of Optiplex 745. You can find the location of your battery by going to the following link, selecting the form factor that matches your Optiplex 745 and then selecting the 2nd link under "About Your Computer". This will show you a diagram of the system board components and will give you the location of your battery.

Hope that helps but if you have any further problems, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Hi diaz_20110,

CMOS battery on the motherboard stores the BIOS setting and real time clock settings when the computer is OFF. If the CMOS battery charge is exhausted or the battery is dead the BIOS setting and real time clock settings on the computer will not be stored and every time the BIOS will check for all the hardware on the system and the clock and time will not be set.

CMOS battery will not cause the computer shut down or have black screen.

Please reply for any queries.

CR2032 batteries are Equivalent to Duracell DL2032 etc.

Most Grocery Store ***'s have these because they are used in Large hearing Aids and in Blood Sugar testers.

Duracell DL2032 3.0-Volt Lithium Battery | Staples®

CAUTION: A new battery can explode if it is incorrectly installed. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.

To remove the battery:

  1. If you have not already done so, make a copy of your configuration information, found in system setup.

  2. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.  <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

  3. Locate the battery socket.

NOTICE: If you pry the battery out of its socket with a blunt object, be careful not to touch the system board with the object. Ensure that the object is inserted between the battery and the socket before you attempt to pry out the battery. Otherwise, you may damage the system board by prying off the socket or by breaking circuit traces on the system board.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the battery connector, you must firmly support the connector while removing the battery.

  1. Remove the system battery.

    1. Support the battery connector by pressing down firmly on the positive side of the connector.

    1. While supporting the battery connector, press the battery tab away from the positive side of the connector and pry the battery it up out of the securing tabs at the negative side of the connector.

I have an Optiplex 745 that eats these batteries for breakfast.  What would cause this machine to need a new battery every few months?

I have the same question.  we have over 150 GX745 SFF desktops out there and 3 need new CMOS battery EVERY 90 days.  You can almost set your clock by it.

gave up buying batteries and sending tech to site, replaced the systems with another GX745.

Dell!  What causes this?

Marinus.

Received Same message on Dimension 5150. Is there any solution to this?

Hi Coolcu,

The solution was provided above. Please let me know if you have any additional questions about how to replace your motherboard battery.

Good luck!

I for one do not consider that a solution.  The battery should last many years, not 3 months.

Have the other systems had their batteries replaced?

Its possible it could be an issue from the vendor you are procuring batteries from.

Since you have 150 have you tried taking out a battery from a good system and putting it in a bad system to see if it lasts more than 90 days? Simultaneously have you put a new battery in a good system to see if it lasts more than 90 days.

Finally do you have all 745s at BIOS revision 2.6.6
