Hi timsoles,

To answer your first question I have prepared a small comparison table which lists some of the very basic differences between the two processors. However, I would not be able to comment about the pricing:

If you look at the table evidently Intel I3-2120 is a better processor.

Answering your second question, you will not need to change the Heatsink for the machine as Heatsink assembly (Dell part # FGW90) fits on all types of processors aptly.

Please revert for clarification.

 Hi timsoles,

OptiPlex 790 is designed with support for Nehalem architecture processors including:

  1. Sandy Bridge (2nd Generation i3, 2nd Generation i5 and 2nd Generation i7)
  2. vPro feature Support.

You can refer to the following table for the list of all supported processors.

Please revert for clarification.

Many thanks.

Am I right in thinking that a change from G630 to 2nd Gen i3 2120 will bring about a noticeable and cost effective improvement in performance?

I might wait a while for the price of the i5 and i7 to come down a bit before a further upgrade.

Bearing in mind I have the USFF do you know if the existing heat sink is adequate for all the processors, or am I likely to need different cooling for the faster processors?

As one who needs the heatsink/ fan assembly part FGW90, I cannot find it on the dell website. How does one order it?
