Even though Pentium 4, Pentium D, and Core 2 all use socket LGA-775, generally speaking the older sockets are not compatible with newer processors like the Core 2.

Dear shoj
As far as I know, optiplex 320 best compatible cpu is intel pentium D (900 family)
How can u successfully upgrade the cpu?
recently I bought Pentium D 830 to replace my original Celeron 420
but after I install the pentium D 830, then:
>start button led and mainboard led turn yellow
>CPU fan run very fast and noisy
>the computer cannot boot
Can you help me shoj?

Did you guys clear CMOS after CPU instillation?
Pull the CMOS battery and boot then force power off and replace battery reboot to make bios go back to default.
Any difference??
