Sound on the computer is all cloudy and empty like?

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 Desktop unit and the on-board sound card was working fine. I decided to use a different sound card and install that with the correct drivers but it didn't work. So I uninstalled it and went back to using my old sound card. I have a 5.1 dell sound system and It works fine on my mp3 player and other things but when plugged into the computer, the sub doesn't work, the rear speakers don't work and the front speakers sound loud and kinda cloudy. The computer has the jacks for the sub, rear and front speakers. I've uninstalled and reset the driver from the dell cd quite a few times now and have uninstalled the other sound cards software and driver aswell. I'm a bit of a techy but this just has me stumped.

Help would be awesome for this.

Still nothing.

Have you reset the speaker type for 5.1?  With what you've done the speaker setup is probably back to just "stereo desktop" speakers.

As a matter of a fact, it's set to that right now.

Reseat (with the power off) the reinstalled sound card and see if that makes a difference.

How is the sound with headset plugged into the GREEN speaker jack on the rear?
