Task Scheduler

One more question, What is:
Tune-up Application Start?? Does this need to run?
Or is it something I needed the first day I started up my computer?? Windows help was no help on this issue! Thanks again...

Hi Packer,

The Tune-up Application is usually associated with the walign.exe and winalign.exe tools, described in this article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base. You don't need to run this utility if you don't want to, nor do you need to use the Task Scheduler, if you will remember to do the scandisking and defragging jobs on a regular schedule.

Hope this helps,
Kay

How often should I scan and defrag?? I hardly ever use the computer for much more than internet and mail. I did scan and defrag last week for the first time(computer is a month old) and it only took about 30 min. If I hardly ever use windows programs is once a month sufficient???Thanks again.....

Hi Packer,

No problem at all on the help :)

My view is that, given your usage, once a month is a good schedule to be on. Standard scandisking is designed to find folder and file damage which can occur in normal usage as well as in system crashes. Defragging is designed to rewrite installed programming in an efficient fashion, having all files in any given folder contained in series on your hard drive. Since you don't install/uninstall much, all you have to worry about is the amount of downloaded files and e-mail you are accumulating, and keeping those files organized on the hard drive.

Adjust your schedule if you start finding inefficiencies in the way Windows is running--this is fairly subjective, I realize. Running these utilities is one of the things one does if Windows starts acting up--it can act to stabilize Windows again.

Sounds good to me at the moment, though :)

Kay H.,
O.K. I have run scan disc, defragged, emptied my internet temporary files, and emptied my C:\windows
temp. files. For good housekeeping do I also need to do disc clean-up?? Do I ever need to run maintenance wizard???
It's a good thing I'm a stay at home mom/housewife/domestic goddess or else how would I ever have time to keep up with it all? :)
Thanks again....

Packer, you are a hoot :) What we really need is to find us a wife, then we don't have to worry about anything but the computer and all its little idiosyncracies :) Just a 9-5 wife, and we'll take it from there...

Disk cleanup automates what you have done in the way of folder-emptying manually--it's a quick way to do all of it at one time; in addition, though, it offers more in the way of cleanup than what you have done, although the additional options offered aren't all that important. If you start Disk Cleanup and choose a drive to clean up, a window appears which gives you a series of boxes to check, if you want to clean the folders associated with the boxes. If you highlight the options one by one, the functions of the files will be explained to you, and you can then decide if you want to empty them out or not. In terms of keeping Windows properly running, the things you manually do are enough, but using the cleanup tool instead of the manual operation is one way to completely clean things up, and it has the advantage of cleaning the Temporary Internet Files, and most of the Windows\Temp files. The thing with that folder is that Windows has an arbitrary time limit which it uses on files in this folder: if they haven't been accessed within a certain period of time, they can be deleted; they are held for that length of time, which you don't normally do in a manually-done cleaning.

Maintenance Wizard: if you follow a scandisk/defrag schedule on your own, then you will not need to run Maintenance Wizard.

Hope this helps,
Kay

Hi Lori,

Excellent--glad to help :)

No bucks, big or small--that's the beauty of DellTalk; only the Dell Techs who monitor ithe conferences are paid in money. The rest of us are paid in knowledge and enjoyment, and no price can be put on that :)

Talk to you later,
Kay
