UPGRADING THE RAM ON STUDIO 540??
hi, im kinda nooby at this guys so go easy on me with the fancy terms and stuff. Here is the specs on my studio 540-
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
4.00 GB RAM- i think its 667 mhz
ATI Radeon HD 3450
Windows vista 64-bit
I need loads of help, i need to know what type/kind/model of motherboard it has, and i want to upgrade the RAM as much as possible. Like 6-8 gb of
1600 mhzs(if possible), i need to know if the motherboard/ power supply can take it and the highest graphics card it can use. Also, do you have any suggestions
on what ram to get? I know i didn't give a lot of info to help you answer, but im completly clueless on it. Thanks guys! (and girls)

Just upgraded my brand new Studio 540 from 2 GB to 6 GB using a 4 GB kit ( 2 X 2 GB) from Crucial ( part # CT2KIT25664AA800). Newegg (newegg.com) had the kit for slightly less than Crucial did on their website and had free shipping to boot!

According to the Dell manual, 1.8 volt 800 Mhz DDR2 memory and maximum of 8GB with Vista 64 bit (this is the same as my home built PC with a Q6600 CPU). You have to be careful on the memory as a lot of the high speed memory is 2.2 volt and it will not work.
The motherboard is a Dell custom model board, not a standard "retail" motherboard.
I have upgraded my video to an HD4850.
The power supply can either be a 300 or a 350 watt - depends on the options that were ordered with the PC. That probably will not handle many upgraded Video boards.

If you buy non-Dell memory, Crucial is recommended by most of the "techies" on here as Crucial is guaranteed to work on Dells. www.crucial.com Dell's have a history of compatibility with some 3rd party memory vendors - one brand will work in one Dell and not in another and there is no pattern except we see a lot of compatibility problems with Kingston Value RAM so avoid that brand (Kingston is OK, just their "Value RAM" is the problem).
