Upgrade CPU for my Dell Studio 540
I'm planning to upgrade the CPU for my Dell Studio 540. The current motherboard is: DELL Studio 540 MotherBoard M017G 0M017G IPIEL-RN2 775.
Now I'm thinking of buying Intel i3, i5 or i7 CPU. Will these work with my motherboard? And how about the PowerSupply. Do I need to buy a new power supply or I can continue to use the current one, which came with the system when I bought it.
Thanks in advance.

None of the i3, i5, or the i7 processors are supported by the Dell Studio 540, they require a different socket
Intel Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors only.

Yorkfield Quad Core Q9650, 3.00GHz, 12MB, 1333FSB, E0, appears to be the largest processor supported by Studio 540.
Prior to installing the processor, check that you have the latest BIOS version 1.1.3 is installed, when support for added enhancement for CPU function was added.

I think the chassis has CPU cooler mounting bosses permanently attached, and they're unique to the Socket 775.

Hi Bev!
I have the Dell Studio 540 system [Amin Note: Service Tag Edited per TOU policy] with a Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5300 @ 2.60GHz CPU.
Do You know what would be the highest and second highest CPU to search for, in order to upgrade my system?
Regards!

It definitely works with the E7400, as I had one of those in my Studio 540s.
Since my last post in this thread, I learned that some Socket 1155 motherboards are backwards-compatible with Socket LGA775, meaning you could swap in an 1155 board and CPU. A Core i3 Ivy Bridge will outperform the best quad-core CPUs available with the Studio 540.
