Upgrade possibilities on GX280
Hello,
I'd like to upgrade my GX280. The current config list see below:
BIOS Version A08 , BIOS Date 03-03-06
Windows Version Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor
Manufacturer Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Memory
Memory Slot 1 [DIMM1] 1024Mb
Memory Slot 2 [DIMM3] 1024Mb
DVD/CD-ROM Drives HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4165B
Disk Drives SAMSUNG HD103UJ 931.5Gb
WDC WD400BD-75JMC0 37.25Gb
Display Adapters ATI Radeon HD 4670 512Mb
Network Card
Adapters Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller - Packet Scheduler Miniport
I'd mainly like to upgrade its processor, but don't know the possibilities. I'd like a list (or a link where I can get it) of possible choices of processors as an upgrade option.
Could anyone recommend me a list of compatible processors in order of their expected performance in this GX280?
Thanks in advance:
Zsolt

The Optiplex GX280 does not support any Dual Core, or Core 2 Duo processors, single core processors only.
You can use any of the following processors
Prescott P4 Kit, 520, 2.8Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 64bit Kit, 521, 2.8Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 Kit, 530, 3.0Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 64bit Kit, 541, 3.2Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 Kit, 540, 3.2Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 Kit, 550, 3.4Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 Kit, 560, 3.6Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB
Prescott P4 Kit, 570, 3.8Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB

Thanks for your quick answer.
Do you mean, these are (all or most of the) processors/processor family I can use with GX280, and will they improve the performance of the present configuration?
Comparing to the present config(Prescott P4 Kit, 520, 2.8Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB), may I expect "significant" gain of performance, power consumption?
Thanks again:

Which processor are you thinking of upgrading too?
If it's 560, or a 570, you will a see an 'good' increase in performance, but you need to consider other factors, like which graphics card is installed and the amount of RAM.

For a GX280 I like the 650. 2 MB L2 cache. Decent enough speed. They come up for around $35 on ebay.
I love the SMT GX280. I have found a couple of good high power PSUs - 550W and 750W that will fit and the sky is the limit on the graphics card!
Is your GX280 a small mid tower (SMT)?

It sound good! :emotion-1:
So, are usable not only the series of IP4 500 but IP4 600 as well?
As I checked, the compsumption and temperature interval are similar.

I don't know if the 660 or 670 work, so stop at the 650. And don't get the 6x1 series. I don't think that they work. And you will get a nice 20% boost over what you have now.
Is yours the SMT? If you are interested in significantly upgrading graphics and PSU, just ask.

Hello David!
Thank for your answer!
I have found a message: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19296145.aspx, where it is said:
"(While I was working with the C7195, I put a 3.0 GHz P4 in it and it booted right up. I tried flashing the board to BIOS A08, but it still didn't like the 3.4 GHz chip.)"
and my CPU-Z program said: my mainboard model number is 0C7195, So I am a little bit confused about series 5xx.
My BIOS version is A08, as far as I know this is the last available (dated 3/13/2006). I think, processor compatibility should up to be on this two facts: mainboard and BIOS version.
I also think beside clock increase, doubled cache is a significant factor, so if it works I expect boost. (Provided that any of this series of processors are available around me... :-( )
By now, I have a HD4670 VGA card and 450W PSU.
Any suggestions? :-)
Thanks in advance:

One of my GX280s that I am at is a 0G5611 motherboard. It works with the 650. I checked my other GX280 and it is a 0H7276. It also is running a 650. Its exhaust fan is much quieter. I am going to check to see if there may be a problem on one of my fans running too fast. ;-)

Hi Guys,
Does anybody know if the Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz/2M/800 CPU Processor 650 SL7Z7 will work, I have the small form factor?
Does anybody know the highest watt power supply I could upgrade to?
Hope to hear from the experts.
Rgds&thanks

I just got a shot to buy a GX280 from work for $25. I've been using a Mac Mini I got on craigslist for the past year. Decent little machine, but I'm afraid its built-in video just wasn't going to cut it for the forthcoming StarCraft2... And for $25, c'mon, decent place to start!
I'll get the computer tomorrow, and I'll post whatever info I need to/can to get some ideas. I'm gonna go with a generic Geforce 9800 card (unless you guys have any good sub $100 suggestions). Of course this means I'll need a new power supply. I'm getting the tower - will a standard ATX power supply fit?
Seems like there is a lot of confusion on what memory you can/can not use, and what the max you can load it up with is. Any clarification?
And I know this is a stupid question (sorry, I've been out of PC hardware for a while) but is this a 32 bit of 64 bit set-up?
Thank you for any and all help!
