Upgrading The 4700C...

If I get a Dell 4700C with Intigrated Graphics... I'll still have a PCI-Express card space open...So my questions is if due to the 4700C's small size, will I still be able to plug in any of the newer PCI 16x Cards such as an ATI Radeon 256MB X700 ??? Or is the cards just too big for the small system???

So if I got an XT series that would be ok because the specs say it's a low-profile card...??? If not i'll yeah...just go with the tower...

Only if someone releases a card in a small form factor. If upgradeability is a concern, skip the small footprint system and get the tower.

For what it's worth, I just ordered the video card from the site below for my 4700c.

I'm optimistic that since it's an x300, and has the half-height adapter it will work without problems.  But then again, I could have just wasted almost $200.  If so, I'll post back to the thread in a week after it's set up.

I got the x300 card with 256MB of ram in the mail last night.  The low rise card and low-rise extender appeared perfect.  Opened the case and it all installed without a hitch.  I was temporarily delighted.

Then I treid to close the case.  The case won't close.

Unfortunatly the card is to long. When closing the case the hard drive tray bumps up against the card and it won't close.  It's only a gap of about 2-3 cm, but it's enough.

Unless you are willing to modify your case Do Not Buy This Card for the Dell 4700c.  I imagine that the shorter 125MB card would work alright though.

Obviously I'm very disgouraged.  If anyone has any bright ideas, or wants to trade for a low rise 128MB card version that WILL fit, let me know.

The card listed in the above post is no longer sold by Power Color.

It has been replaced by the card that is now at that link which is 128meg Hyper Memory, can be software upgraded to 256meg.  The old card R37L-ND3 was longer than the new one R37L-SC3C which measures  6 3/8 inches from bracket to the back of the PCB.

Also take a look at the MSI RX300 PCI Express 128meg  It measures 6 5/8 inches

Both are shorter than the card listed in the above post.

Both are based on the x300, correct?  Any performance difference between them that is worth noting?

If you expand the memory to 256mb, does it "grow" the length of the card?

thanks!

yes they are both ATI X300 chipset cards.

No, there is no physical difference in the size of the card.

The memory is software expandable.

It can use upto 128 megs of system memory in addition to the onboard 128megs factory installed.

As to performace difference between the two.  we have not seen benchmarks for the two side by side so at this time we can not speak to that issue.
