What is the difference between Crucial Memory products : CT6464Z335 and CT289645?
Thanks much for the answer to my yesterday's question regarding RAM upgrade on my Dell 4550. Now, a question about Crucial memory:
What is the difference between these two memory sticks: CT6464Z335 and CT289645?
When I use the memory selector on crucial's web site for my Dell 4550 PC (with 533MHz FSB), it lists out CT289645, but surprisingly this product is not to be found anywhere on google or yahoo search engines.
The former product (CT6464Z335) is available for $65 on googlewear, nextegg etc. Both show same specs and price ($78.99) on crucial.com. Can I use either of these for my PC? If I purchase the memory from other than crucial, would I get same kind of tech support as I would if I bought it from crucial?
Would like your advice please....
thanks much

kkdaltx.
Buy the CT6464Z335, this is the module I received from Crucial today and it works perfectly in a D/4550 showing the correct 333MHz FSB and is the only memory that Crucial states that will work in a D/4550 !!!. This replaces cheaper RAM I purchased last week, supposedly 333MHz FSB but, when installed read 266MHz, now I'm having to RMA the module.

kkdaltx, the "specific" memory module number is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. The 2 modules you mention are the same. I ordered a 256MB PC100 module for my HP laptop, and a 256MB PC100 module for my wife's Gateway laptop. 2 different numbers using Crucial's configurator. The memory they shipped had neither of those 2 numbers, but matched the number of the memory module I got by searching Crucial by specification, not computer model.
Good memory, decent prices, but it's not magic. Newegg also doesn't charge sales tax. Crucial might.

Both the products are same. The following is the reply I got from crucial today (15 days after I sent in my question - BTW, I already got my memory stick ordered from googlegear and have been using it for almost 2 weeks on my pc without any problems):
"The number ct289645 is what we call an external part number which refers to what model of computer you ordered for. The CT6464Z335 is the actual part number which literally works for thousands of systems, so the first ct number is our way of keeping track of what system you order".
Anyway thanks for the help.......
