The XPS 420 has a Dell BTX motherboard.

List of compatible XPS 420 processors, can be found here:-

Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to version A07, with version A06 support for newer processors was added.

Honestly, if you have a Q6600, it is really not worth upgrading on the 775 socket board.  The best are the 9650s, but the cost for them is just way too much.  CPU upgrades will not be bottlenecked by your motherboard or memory limitations. The only bottlenecks you should look at are between the CPU and video card.   I have a Q6600 and I would never upgrade it unless I had to due to failure of the CPU.  It performs great for anything I need it to do and you may not even notice any difference on any upgrade you would do beyond it.
