dimension 8100 integrated 3Com NIC not working

I have a dimension 8100 with the integrated 3Com 3C920 (3C950c-tx compatible) NIC and it appears to have stopped working as I can't access the internet with my cable modem.

I tried to release/renew and release all/renew all in winipcfg but it won't do it .

I am able to ping myself 127.0.0.1  but cant ping others.

I do rember that there was a file in the drivers properties that didn't have a location (ie: c:\windows\system\xxfile namexx.  ) it only showed the name. Weird?  Is my driver corrupt?

can I un-install / install the device with it being integrated?

My settings in control panel / netwroking are set just as they were before when everything was working.

What else do I need to do / try !?!?!

I would lean more to your cable modem malfunctioning than the nic. I've gone through several modems already. Try unplugging  modem (power) and disconnecting the cable. Wait a few minutes, reconnect the cable, plug the power back in.

thanks kenny, I know that is not the problem either (sorry for not mentioning that)

I have already tried all that  and my modem works on a different computer just fine both using the same isp.

I don't remember what folder the drivers are in. You could DL the drivers from here and reinstall them:

thanks again

how would I go about deleting / uninstalling old files / device

or  would it be fine to just do a "driver update" from device manager?

I believe when you DL the file and follow the intructions to unzip it, there will be a readme.htm file that will tell you how to iunstall them. Just follow the instructions it gives. I would chose the DL that creates the floppies then when windows asks, just point it to the floppy drive.

well as best I can tell I removed the nic in the networking, rebooted, it searched for new found plug n play (the nic) and tried to re-install it but said a .dll file was missing but I did a search for it and there it was in my computer, but I dont think I got it installed properly so right now my computer hangs or doesn't load up properly.

my mouse/keyboard didn't work the last time I rebooted, the time before that some other .dll error came up when loading.

I know i'm not that stupid, but this is irritating the krappola out of me.

Should I just but a new NIC pci card and be done with it, cause not being able to 'log on' at home is no fun.

Did you DL the drivers from the Dell download site? Depending on which DL you chose (zip or exe), reinstall the drivers from those instructions. Reboot. When you get the missing dll messages are you prompted with any options (IE. skip or search)? If so, open a search in anoter window for that file, when found, just direct the prompt to get the file from there.

Yea I tried all that and nothing was working so I went to circuit city and bought a netgear fa311 NIC and installed it and its drivers and now I dont get that Media disconnected showing in my ipconfig, but,

It doesn't seem to want to d/l a whole page of info. It takes a very long time, I reset my MTU and receive window size, etc, it receives ping pretty good, it just wont d/l all the pictures and info.

what else should I look at?

Is this a good card, they also had the Linksys. I would have perfered a 3Com but they didn't have one.

Could be the card. I found some mixed reviews on it here:

Getting back to your 3com integrated card, did you try reinstalling from the Resource CD? See here:

Yea thanks for the link. I have read that one in searching for some help, but I thought I'd try it anyway. Mabey I should have got the linksys.

I have not had a chance to try anything else since I installed the card on friday 7-11, I have been away all weekend.

Yea, I have tried to re-install the drivers it and I think I did everything right, but I might try it again as these instructions are a little clearer (no make that a lot clearer) than the basic stuff in my owners manual.
