upgrade i5 to i7 !!!!

The Studio XPS 8100 has an Intel P55 chipset, so any processor compatible with that chipset will work.

There is no warranty issue changing the operating system except that Dell may ask you to restore the original operating system to diagnose a hardware issue.

I have no clue about the socket configuration. I have had my XPS 8100 for six weeks or so with the i7-860. I don't know if they would offer more than one motherboard or not. But I doubt it.

Thanks for the answer, but I don't know what type the socket is. Gone through ebay, The only information is telling socket type for i7 to fit. Dell site tell this type chipset is 57 !!!!

Humm, chat with Dell last night and he said my PC can use Lynnfield Processor kit i7-870, 2.93, 8mb , 95w , b1, and the only one processor that I can use. Dell doesn't sell this.  Well this one is 2.9ghz. All the other xps 8100 has i7-860 as you have and the web carry Dell xps 8100 only i7-860, So this is making me more confuse. I will call or chat again about the difference processor type i7-870 and i7-860.

XPS 8100 has H57 chipset and will only take LGA1156 socket processors such as i7-8xx, i5-6xx and 7xx.   You cannot use an i7-9xx processor.  Your only upgrade from i5 is to an i7-860 or i7-870.

Whether it is the P55 or H57 chipset, they both would have the LGA1156 CPU socket.  My guess is that it would support any i7-800 series processor.

Here is what I have in my XPS 8100: Motherboard - Mfg. Dell, Inc Model #0T568R Chipset - Intel Southbridge model H57, CPU - Intel Core i7-860 code name Lynfield, socket1156 LGA Technology 45nm. Can't say that I understand all of that but that what it says!

I never build or replace PC before. If I upgade to i7, Anything else that I need to know after replace the CPU like down load BIOS or !!!!

 Thanks you All for more detail about this machine.  Now, I am cocentraded to buy i7-8xx. I just wasted money to buy i5-650, should buy i7 at the beginning. The cost will be more or less 250 dollars to upgrade!!!

On another note; your upgrades are extremely expensive given the fact that you just bought the computer.  An i7-870 costs $550 and the i7-860 is about $300.  Add to that Windows 7 Ultimate and another $200.  This adds up to about the whole cost of the XPS 8100 unless you're getting some really good deals somewhere.  I don't see where you would notice any difference in performance between the 870 and 860 to justify the cost.  If you have the i5-650, the i7 is quite a bit better.  However, I would still have concerns that you would not "feel" the difference depending on your purpose.   Also, do you know if Dell is using a stock Intel heatsink and fan on these processors or are they using their own?  A lot of times, Dell uses there own which is screwed into the motherboard and would then have a back plate versus the stock Intels that have push pins.  It has been mentioned before on these forums that if you replace the stock CPU heatsink and fan that you will get an error beep code on post and have to press an "F" key to bypass it, but I'm not sure if this applies to the new systems or not.  Another question would be can your Dell supplied heatsink and fan be used again for the i7 and keep it cool enough.  If you use the fan and heatsink that comes with the new CPU and Dell has a back plate mounted to the MB, then you would most likely have to remove the motherboard to take the back plate off so the new pins would attach correctly.  Just some thoughts.

As stated above, this is not a cost effective upgrade. Down the road, it will be relatively less inexpensive.
