Question: Deploying Dell Command | Configure Multiplatform Package

Is there a specific method to deploy the multiplatform packages? Currently I'm using Goverlan to run the executable through a batch script with an account that has domain admin rights. It works on the testing PC, though on the deployed PCs it is a different story.

The Vendor Software log doesn't record anything and no changes were apparently made. I even ran the executable manually with the same affect. I thought it was the BIOS firmware revision, A03 rather than A15 for an OptiPlex 780, and didn't have the necessary hooks to process the changes. Updated but same result. Thought maybe Dell Command | Configure had to be installed, even though most I've read points to the contrary, but this was also a no go.

Below is what happens on the testing PC when run.

At this point I am perplexed as to what differed between the deployed PC and the testing PC as they are both OptiPlex 780, with BIOS firmware A15, using the same deployment method and, for kicks, Dell Command | Configure installed. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karland,

DCC (CCTK) requires administartor rights to run as it involves madilfying the BIOS. The SCE can be run on multiple systems using Microsoft SCCM.

Refer to this whitepaper as reference for the same,

Hello Shrinidhi,

I've already tried deploying the multiplatform package as a local user, within local administrators group, and a domain user, within the domain administrators group, with the same results. For kicks I just did it again. The following logs are the same as before but I'll post it as well as a manual run while at the PC.

Some more information. After attempting on a few more workstations one was able to be applied successfully. After reading the log file I was able to determine that it unpacks the multiplatform package, to C:\ProgramData\dell\drivers\*Name of Package*\, then writes the settings, to C:\ProgramData\dell\drivers\*Name of Package*\*Random*.tmp, before applying. What I am seeing is that on the workstations that apply successfully the package is unpacked successfully and the temp file is written and is read from for the rest of the process. The workstations that fail to apply the package is unpacked successfully however the temp file is not created for the rest of the process to read from.

This is the key point in the log,

[01/05/15 14:23:17]
--- Start of Vendor Software Log ---

[01/05/15 14:23:17]    ASCII payload log file detected.

At this point the temp file is detected and read. This line is missing in all the others that have failed the application. Which leads me to believe that the file is not created as referenced in the log just before.

Working Example: [01/05/15 14:23:09]    Temporary payload log file name: C:\ProgramData\dell\drivers\multiplatform_WOL_PXE\SCEC77D.tmp

One of the downsides of this process is that whether the application succeeded or failed the folder and files are deleted, which makes it tricky to capture what takes place and seeing if the temp file is indeed there before the process completes.

Hi Kalrand,

Can you try running the SCE on the system that failed manually and check if it succeeds. The log file will be in the same location as SCE file.

Please let us know.

Ran the SCE manually on the workstation in question three times. Once as a domain admin, then as a domain user, then as a local user. Each are in the local administrators group. Each a no go.

All logs are virtually identical, I've attached the local user log. Below is the system information.

Hi Karland,

The issue does not seem to be specific to DCC or a particular system, however we will try out on Opti 780 and update.

IMHO, the issue is probably because, the DCC logs are getting deleted by some antivirus or some other protection tool. Can you try disabling any such protection tools and try?

Have you tried importing the ini file directly in DCC, has it worked?

I can try without Sophos running, though not sure why it would work on another identical OptiPlex 780 with Sophos running. Also, this is not model specific. Tried it on an OptiPlex 790 (Remotely, Goverlan Scope and PSExec, as a Domain Admin and a Local Admin) and got the same results.

If you mean installing DCC and importing the saved config file, no I have not. With over 100 workstations I'm hoping not to do this one at a time.

I have added exclusions for folder, no change. Disabled Sophos on-access and behavior monitoring, no change. Stopped all Sophos services, no change. Short of uninstalling Sophos I don't think there are any options left in that area. Checked folder permissions for C:\ProgramData\dell\drivers, same as others that are working.

I've included a table below of the PCs I have tested on, each test I'm running the same executable on each of the systems (copied then run). As you can see other models are also affected and BIOS revision doesn't seem to be a factor at least with the 780s. I tried again to watch if the tmp file for the applyconfig command was created in the C:\ProgramData\dell\drivers\(Package_Name) however it seems to create and delete it so quickly that I cannot tell.
