Add PS6100 to an existing group
Hi everybody.
We have recently acquired a PS6100 that was installed by Dell Services. We wanted to add this SAN to an existing group (PS4000+PS6000). However, due to different firmware versions (we had 5.0 on running hardware and new one had 5.2.4) we were advised not to do it.
Now we have upgraded our PS4000 and PS6000 to version 5.2.4 and we want to join PS6100 to the same group. The question is if we will loose all data stored in PS6100 when joining to existin group. I assume that we only have to change group IP and group name in PS6100 and put the same that in PS4000/PS6000 in order to joint to existing group, but we are not sure if storage pools and arrays created in PS6100 will be mantained or will be lost during group change.

Unfortunately,. at this time, there is no way to merge groups. So you would have to reset your 6100 in order to add it into the other group. If you have enough room on the old group, you can copy or replicate it there first. Then reconfigure your servers to connect to the old group.

You're welcome. How much local storage do you have? You can storage vMotion as much as possible to original group and use local ESX server storage also. Might need to reduce snapshot reserve, thin provision volumes, etc to free up space fist. Then reset 6100 and add it to group and re-vmotion VMs over. One of the many benefits of ESX.

Local storage is not an option. Our storage is about 4TB and local capacity only 500GB in two servers. We have another PS6000 and a PS4000 but there is not free space available at this moment. We are planning to add a new PS4100 with about 12x900GB SAS for a new deployment and with a RAID50 we would have space enough to complete migration and after finishing reconfigure in RAID10 (our primary election).

Not worse thing in the world to have different groups for awhile.
