Live upgrade of 6210 in virtual environment

I’ve got a PS6210X and PS6210X both running 7.0.2 and I want to update to 7.0.9. The arrays are independent of each other and are acting as storage for vmware/hyper-v machines.

The 6210X is a little under 1000 iops during slow period (raid 50) and the 6210XS is about the same, maybe higher (raid 6)

If I upgrade without having an outage, will the VMs survive or will everything crash because the storage disappears? The wiring is redundant and I’ve recently managed to power cycle each of the iscsi switches without much trouble to fix another issue (I made sure to have the active controller have both active ports after)

Thanks

Hello,

If you have followed the ESXi + EQL best practices, and set the DiskTimeOut value in the VMs themselves you should have no issues during the FW upgrade.   There is a PDF on the EQLSUPPORT.DELL.COM website (login required) which covers how to set these timeouts.  It's located with the EQL firmware downloads.

This PDF has info on configuring ESXi + EQL storage.

My upgrade got delayed a little so going to attempt in the next few days. I looked at the Storage manager update program and it lists 7.0.9 for my array. On the web site I see there's a 7.0.10 and 7.1.1.

I don't think I want to try the 7.1.1 (which appears to add support for the new 4210 only) but is it safe to go with 7.0.10 even though the update manager isn't showing it?

Hello,

Correct, 7.1.1 is equivalent to 7.0.10. So you are safe upgrading to it.

As you noted it only adds support for the new 4210 controller.  However, I suspect future fixes will be added to the 7.1.x stream, not the 7.0.x firmware.  So you may have to go to 7.1.x in the future.

Re: Update Manager.  There should be an updated version on the support website.

i tried running update manager from the web site and it still shows 7.0.9 in the GUI. I've already downloaded the 7.0.10 files so I'll just connect to the group myself and update without using the update manager. There's no other updates other than the main firmware anyway
