Dell MD1200, H710 with R720XD

Hi,

I was asked if NL-SAS drieves from Seagate (ST4000NM0023) can be used in following setup.

Dell MD1200 + Perc H710 + PowerEdge R720XD.

The answer I gave them was - this needs to be tested. Because in the documentation it is stated that Dell branded hard drives have to be used.

I know that certain Perc controllers will give a warning each time if non-dell drives are used but they work without problems. Is it the same case when using an MD1200 box?

Regards,

Indrek

Indrp,

You are correct that only certain drives are tested and supported in the MD arrays. Below is a link that will take you to one of the manuals that list all of the supported hard drives for the MD 1200 and MD1220.

ftp.dell.com/.../powervault-md1200_Reference%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Please let me know if you have any further questions as I would be happy to help out.

I did some looking and from what I am seeing the documents online have not been updated. However, when you call your sales rep to order drives they will be able to pull the the full list of all the drives that will work in the MD1200.

Is there a newer document available as this does not cover drives over 2TB. But MD1200 can be purchased from Dell using 4TB drives.

"4TB 7.2K RPM Near-Line SAS 6Gbps 3.5in Hot-plug Hard Drive".

In conclusion I have advised them this - to get full support order drives from Dell.

Want to get lower cost - test different 4TB NL-SAS drives on your own risk.
