3rd party adapter?

yes im having the adapter problem everyone else is having...for the 5th time, only this time my computer is off warranty. i have no interest in paying 80 dollars for a replacement from dell that in 5 months will also turn into a heavy paper weight. I'm sick of getting trash and i was wondering if there were any 3rd party AC adapters out there that i wouldnt have to replace twice a year.

Third party adapters will power the system but will not charge the battery.   Dell adapters are more like $30-35 than $80 -- how are they failing?

search the forums it seems to be a very common problem, but basically the computer does not recognize the adapter, the computer works, but with a significant cut in performance and the battery does not charge..when i look to see, the adapter is listen as "unknown adapter" ive told them about the problem several times, all they do is ask if i am under warranty and throw another adapter at me.

Then it sounds like the power jack is the problem - not the adapter.

Most third party adapters WILL send the necessary signals to the laptop.

Check eBay for low cost units.

This number of failures is not the adapters, but the operator. Many have this problem because of abuse of the cords (tripping over them, yanking them out, allowing the baby to pull them, etc). And, as ejn63 said, this abuse can also result in breaking the DC socket on the laptop. With proper care, they will last forever.

I have had that problem.   for me it seems to be a connection with the battery.  Whenever it starts to do that I shut down my computer unplug the battery and replug it in.  So far it has fixed the problem everytime.

The laptop battery that came with my new Dell 15R Inspiion (purchased in July 2011) has never charged.  I replaced the adaptor and that didn't work.  I replaced the battery and that didn't work.  So...I can't take my "mobile" laptop anywhere without a plug in.

I searched the Dell troubleshooting site and there was a reference in downloading a BIOS update, which can cause an AC Adapter error.  When I went to download it, I got a message that my battery needs to be at least 10% charged to download the update.  Well, since the battery doesn't charge, that's not happening.  I removed the battery to see if it would work just with the AC Adapter plugged in and I got an error message that the AC Adapter needs to be plugged in.  Argh!

I don't think this issue is the battery or the AC Adapter.  The laptop is not recognizing the power supply, battery or AC Adapter.

It appears, from readying other posts, it wouldn't do any good to contact Dell Support.  Frustrating.
