4GB RAM for Vostro 1500

Hi

I was customizing the Vostro 1500 online and was astonished to find that the RAM price for 4 GB is way higher than opting for a 3GB or a 2GB one.

The notebook's max RAM capacity is 2GB - 2 x 2GB.
Default selected is 1GB.

2GB (2 x 1024MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [+Rs. 3869] ($96.70)
3GB (1x1GB + 1x2GB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [+Rs. 8887] ($222)
4GB (2 x 2048MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [+Rs. 25637] ($640)

According to the last line, a 2GB module costs RS 12818 ($320), yet when 3GB is selected, its far less.

I was hoping to get the max out of this notebook - 4GB, but why does 4GB costs this much when compared to 2/3GB ?

Thanks

Hi
Save your { {money}} 4 gig,s with any 32 bit version of Windows will not see or use anything over
3 gig,s of memory  !
If you go to the 64 bit versions of Windows it will see and use the full 4 gigs !
You can read on these forums about it , it has been posted over & over many times
where is my missing ram !

Good Luck!

You may find the ram cheaper from other than Dell.l
Good luck with your Linux - Fedora Core 7 !

I've selected DOS Factory Installed option as I intend on installing Linux - Fedora Core 7, not Windows.

For whatever reasons it is a fact that individual 2 GB modules cost far more (way more than double) than 2 X 1 GB modules.  It rarely makes economicsense to buy a 2 GB module.

2 X 1GB will give good results and will maintain dual channel capability.  Dell will not exchange memory modules later and buying and installing compatible memory from a vendor will not affect your hardware warranty.  Many forum regulars recommend Crucial for memory upgrades.  Here's a link to good info and guaranteed compatible memory:

"OK if i were going to install Linux Fedora that would be my choise !" Which one ? 2GB, 3GB or 4GB ? I dont want to insert a 3rd party module, as this may affect support ? I would rather rely on Dell's support for everything on this notebook - after all its like a desktop which is easy to open and insert. It would require more caution to handle a notebook. I was thinking I would go far a 2GB module now (2 x 1GB) and have it upgraded to 4GB in a yr's time when the prices have come down. But would Dell exchange for the old ones for a lesser price ?

"Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules."
This is news to me. So a 2 X 1GB would be better off than a 1x1GB + 1x2B ?

Btw, is 2GB more than enough for FC7 ? Im looking for sufficient as I got to install a whole lot of services for development LAMP, Postgres, Oracle, Java( Java EE) etc etc etc.

For heavy crunching with many windows open then I would say more memory is better.  For general purpose uses I would go with 2 X 1 GB dual channel, but your intense usage might be better served with the higher memory if you're willing to pay for a 2 GB module and a 1 GB module.

I guess, I'll shell out for more memory for this purpose anyway since so much RAM may be required. Probably go for 4GB.

If a dedicated keypad is important to you I don't think the 1500 has one; the 1700 might. The multimedia equivalent of the the 1700 (the 1720) does. I do think 4 Gb is the way to go for your needs/apps. What are you serving ?

"keypad" ? Keyboard ? I probably will use a separate USB keyboard. Not biggie here.
"What are you serving ?" Linux Development purposes. PHP, Python, Java etc etc.

I was referring to the numeric keypad. As you know the "A" in LAMP stands for Apache which is open-source server software; I was wondering what use you  were going to make of it. Just curious.
