8600 or XPS?

Just thought I would post here to see what the opinions are.... Basically I have a desktop at work and at home that I want to get rid of in favor of a good powerful laptop. Games are pretty important & so is performance, But on the same hand I want to be able to take the laptop to the library or Starbucks and that kinda thing as well so the 8600 seems like a good size I know someone said "Well it's only .5" bigger.." but thats 1/4 the thickness of the laptop!

This was the config I was looking at for the 8600

1.7 Pentium M
1024 Mb Ram
60 7200 RPM HD
Radeon 9600

That being said I can get all that for about the baseline price of the XPS. (Which would have a lot less ram) I mean I don't know for sure but wouln't you think a system like the 8600 would be able to play HL2 and Unreal Tournament 2004?, maybe not. Most of my time is spent coding (But also using 3D Apps) so while coding isn't bad the 3D Stuff uses any power the system has.......

Does anyone happen to have an 8600 configured like above who would be willing to run some benchmarks on it? That way I could run the same on my work system (Which is a 2.4 Ghz machine) and see how it compares.....

Any thoughts please post them!

Well, if you want performance and to play games, then the XPS is what you want...seems pretty clear to me.

i have an 8600 with all the good stuff(see my sig.) i can play very high graphics games with no problems like call of duty, and mech warrior 4. the only real thing better on the xps is better processor.

Seems to me that the XPS is more like a brick (very heavy) and much thicker... I guess if you are looking at a machine that you hardly move around, then it would be a good buy. Can't imagine it getting good battery life (couldn't find any reference to that in its specs - probably not worth mentioning). I can get nearly 8 hours with my 8600 with both batteries. Great performance on it too... Very happy with it. Plus, I won't throw out my back lugging it around...

P.S. Does anyone know if the snap covers for the XPS will fit on the 8600?

Go with the 8600, Its perfect for what you need, very very powerful, runs all your aps perfectly, games ? well I play lots of graphic intense games and have not had one that the 8600 could not play with ease...its that good....also you will have an extra grand in your pocket for more important things in life..its just the best all around notebook with everything you could possibly need built right in,without paying an arm and a leg for!!!!!!

One more question, Does anyone notice a bad slowdown in performance when you have mutiple programs running(I know there will be some but comparable to a desktop?). I don't know why but I have heard some people complain about this on laptops (Maybe ram or bus issue?)

I might be missing something, but on DELL CANADA, configuring a XPS laptop comes out to less than a 8600...the 8600 has to have a 1.6GHz processor for it to stay competetive w/the XPS.. + it has the same amount  of RAM, same HD, and a worse graphic card (Anandone.com tests rate 9700 approximately 25% higher than 9600). A 1.7 with 1024MB RAM is much more expensive than an XPS...also the RAM is 333MHz compared to 400MHz..

I have to choose between the 2 too, so any help = appreciated. I'm looking for around $3000CAN, so about 2200$US.

thanks,

I.

I just priced out an XPS and without adding anything (3 year on-site, no floppy drive), it came to $3,581.56 with the tax.

exactly. and if u configure a 8600, with 1.5 WUXGA, 512RAM, 60HDD 7200RPM, and Radeon 9600, you'll come out to the same price.

What!? I just configured and 8600 like you said with XP Pro A/B/G wireless and a DVD burner and it's only $2,453 thats over a grand less.....

8600 owns i dont even know why anyone would buy an xps i mean its a little better, but not a whole lot, its the p4 with ht that ups the price so much, its such an expencive processor.

canadian, canadian dollars :)

i mean the XPS in canadian as well.

i jus did it, w/a 1.5 : 3,048$CAN without TAX

Base:
Pentium®M Processor,1.5GHz,15.4 WUXGA

Operating System:
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition

Memory:
512MB,DDR,333MHz 1 Dimm

Video Card:
128MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600 PRO

Hard Drive:
60GB - 7200rpm UltraHard Drive:

etc etc.

A basic XPS (3.4GHz, 60GB, 9700radeon, 512MB ram, etc) comes out to 3099...both have the most basic warranty.

It's really strange I think...well the Inspiron IS alot smaller and thinner, but most people here say XPS is more $$...it's actually not, if u configure the Inspiron even MODERATELY well..

Well, then they're both way too expensive!

GENERAL: When are you guys from the U.S. going to learn...if someone says they paid $3500-4000 for a notebook; they're probably talking CDN$, eh? We have computers up here, too. We keep them under a shelf in our igloos.

what I wanna know is: how much of a performance boost does a P4 3.4 have over a PM 1.7...to see if it's worth the battery life..CNET an all that havent posted reviews yet..

anyone have any numbers?

well keep in mind a 1.7ghz pentium m is about a 2.6 pentium 4 so its better, i mean the p4 with ht is the best processor out right now (if you dont count the amd 64bit ones) as long as you have sufficent ram you will be fine, you will however be able to tell a difference. im not a computer expert(not yet at least) but the p4 with ht is brand new so its going to be more expencive, if you really must have an xps i would wait a little while for the price to go down.

all in all, yes it is better it will make your computer faster but your going to pay the price to get it.

Probably not much, unless it's HT. I think, within 6 months or so, the Pms will be over 2GHZ.
