A fingerprint reader is a security device that uses a scanned image of your finger for authentication. With fingerprint security software you can logon to applications and secure web site by scanning your finger instead of typing your user name and password from the keyboard.
It cannot be used to scan anything apart from fingerprints. However, you can import and export the data from one system to another using the Digital Persona Personal software.
