Audio Controller Not Detected

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series laptop.  I installed Ubuntu 17.04 on it, and for a few days it worked perfectly.

This morning, the analog audio stopped working. I have tried all day to get it to work, even going as far as re-installing Ubuntu.  I rebooted and went into the BIOS, and looked at the Info screen.  The line for Audio Controller said {none}.  

Has anyone else run across this issue? Do I have a defective laptop?

Hello.You could try re-installing the Realtek audio driver. Without knowing which model laptop you have, I can't say for sure, but probably Dell does not supply one for Ubuntu. If there isn't one on the support page for your model, try the one from the Realtek site.

1.Go to the Realtek downloads selection page. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
2. On the page click on "High Definition Audio Codecs".
3. Check "I accept" and then "next".
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see a couple of Linux drivers. I don't know if they are the right ones for your Ubuntu system -- you would have to ask on a dedicated Linux support site about that.


If re-installing the Realtek driver doesn't help, run the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA diagnostic utility. That utility resides in the BIOS memory -- doesn't matter which operating system is installed.

> Re-start the computer and tap the F12 key as soon as it starts to boot up. If the computer boots to Windows re-start the computer and try again.

> Select 'Diagnostics' from the boot menu, then press the Enter key. Either the ePSA or the PSA tests will open -- it depends on the model of your laptop.

> Look for a "Perform Quick Audio Check" button on the bottom right side of the ePSA main menu screen (see screen shot below). Press the button and listen for the tones from the speakers.

If you don't hear the tones, then that combined with the other symptoms might mean failed audio hardware. That is covered under the warranty, so you would want to contact tech support, but they will probably require you to revert the laptop back to its original OS before providing support.

So before contacting Support, perform a system recovery and get the laptop back to its original factory configuration. That is really the gold standard to test the hardware. The audio was working with that configuration, so if it no longer works with that configuration then you know for sure that the hardware has failed.

If the laptop is still within the brief return period, you can exchange or return it .
