BIOS Update for Dell XPS M1730
I have a Dell XPS M1730 running Windows 7 64 bit. The current BIOS is from 2008. Will I run into any problems if I update my laptop BIOS to MXG7A11 from 2010? Is it safe to go ahead and update?

Hi Paul91,
Welcome to the Community. The 2010 Bios version has added new thermal fan tables for Graphic card. So I suggest you to update your BIOS, as this will help. Make sure you have the AC adapter and the Battery ( Charged atleast 15 % ) connected to the system when flashing the Bios. Do not turn of system when flashing the Bios. Below is the link for the BIOS update.

Thank you

I've had this BIOS update since it's release, and the supposed new thermal tables don't really work for me... and never really have.
While the new BIOS keeps the video card much cooler... it also makes for a VERY loud laptop, because the fans are CONSTANTLY throttling up and down, Speed up for 2 seconds... slow down for 2 seconds... speed up for 2 seconds.. speed down for 2 seconds.. over and ever, it never stops.
The noise in unbearable and just annoys me no end. I used to leave the laptop on, when I wasn't using it. But because of the constant never-ending noise, while not in use, it's in sleep. Even when the laptop is idle, it's always throttling up and down... even more so when the screensaver is running.
I'm always blowing out the dust with compressed air , to make sure the vents are clear, but still... fans on, fans off, fans on, fans off. Really, I have NO idea why it's doing it. But what I DO know is.. I wish it would stop.

I just downloaded this version 11 BIOS update and am getting the same fan effect. It is VERY annoying. Does DELL have any solution? Even if the fan ran as some middling-rate of speed, it would be better than the constant on-of-on-off.

Tell me about it. All you can hear is fan spin up.. fan spin down, fan spin up... fan spin down... all the time. It's driving me crazy. Unless you can keep the laptop cool at a minus temperature... the fans NEVER stop.
Unless Dell releases an A12 BIOS update, with slightly better fan/temp controls, we're stuck with it. Unless we all go back to A10, and let our XPS's fry themselves.

How do you flash the BIOS to an older version. This fan business is stupid

You'd have to download the A10 BIOS file. I don't think it's on Dells website anymore. However, still have it saved on my laptop. If you still require it.. here it is:
hotfile.com/.../MXG71A10.EXE.html
This whole fan thing is really annoyingly stupid. Most of the time, even I have so much as an IMAGE open in Paint, the graphics card temp ramps up and the fans kick in. As soon as I close Paint, it cools back down again as fast as it heats up. It's really stupid.
Does displaying an image REALLY put that much strain on the GPU that it gets a lot hotter? Something's not right there.
We seriously need an A12 BIOS form you Dell, or at the very least, a proper, working GPU fan controller, so we can set our own speeds and temps.

Hi, So good to see others having the same issue with A11 BIOS. I've been playing around with the I8kfanGUI for 2 days and the only way I can get my XPS M1730 to cool down is to have the fans ith fans on full. My laptop overheats itself in 12 mins otherwise. I had about 6-10 overheats now and not being too familiar with laptops am really concerned about the heat it was giving off and what effect it was going to have on my laptop. Fantastic laptop for the last 3 years or so, never had any problems with it but so very frustrated right now. Go back to A10 (not really sure how to and the impact on setting up I8kfanGUI again). A concerned dedicated Dell customer for the last 18 years or so Baron

Yep... we're out there, lol. I8kfanGUI never worked for me, as it's not geared up for Dell laptops with 3 or more fans. I used SpeedFan for a while which seemed to help... until I realized it wasn't helping at all.
I then started to use EVGA Precision X, which I still use now. I heard good things about it, but even still... it still doesn't seem to control the fans very well, if at all. On BIOS A11, the fans would still constantly spin up high, low, high, low... when running EVGA. It's like nothing can stop the fans from doing this.
So I've gone back to A10 myself, and I have a tower fan blowing on it most of the time. This seems to help, but my hands and arms are freezing, lol.
I really hope Dell released an A12 BIOS with more tolerate fan control. Or even if nVidia themselves make dedicated GeForce fan controller software... we can only hope.
