If you don't need the mobility, you can remove the failing battery and leave it out. Always use the adapter alone and shutdown properly--just as you would shutdown a desktop. One drawback is bios updates will not install without a working battery. Since replacement batteries cost over $100 it's better to save the money for a replacement computer. BTW, today's lithium batteries should not be drained to empty or near empty.

Batteries Last for 300 to 500 cycles or 1 year.
This is why you never see a battery warranty longer than 1 year ever from anyone.
Batteries do not last longer if they are not charged. If you use a battery once and then
leave on the shelf for a year you can have that issue where its dead.
