This means that the screen you used (and/or the inverter) isn't fully compatible with your system.  There is no fix other than a different replacement screen.

OK thanks for that.

For the record, and because replacing a laptop LCD screen is a definite minefield(!), if it helps anybody else in the UK with a Dell Dimension 6000, my machine came with an LG.Philips LP154W01 (A5)(K1), but I didn't manage to find an exact replacement in the UK. On the fourth attempt at an alternative, I found that a Samsung LTN154X3-L0D does seem to work, except for the problem with the brightness keys being reversed. You can go into the BIOS to change the default brightness from 1-8, in case it starts up too dim or bright after replacement, which is useful, but it doesn't look like the BIOS lets you reverse the keys.

Cheers

Has anybody else got a slightly more detailed second opinion about this issue - what does 'not fully compatible' mean, is it just a cosmetic problem, or am I running the risk of storing up future problems. The display looks fine to me, it doesn't seem incompatible at all.

Cheers

Notebooks are engineered to work only with those LCD panels that the manufacturer (in this case Quanta, which built the system for Dell) uses in the assembly process.  The BIOS identifies the LCD panel by its EDID -- only those panels known to the system will work completely.  Further, inverters are designed to work only with those panels they're shipped with.

Even a slight variation in the panel part number can render all sorts of incompatibilities - usually, a failure of the backlight to work at all.

The only way to be absolutely sure a panel will work is to buy an exact replacement - check the original and replacement and I'll almost certainly guarantee they're different part numbers.

Since the panel is working other than that the brightness keys are reversed, you should have no other trouble.

If you adjust the brightness in Power Settings, does it work in the correct way or backwards? If it's backwards there also, it would indicate the wiring to the screen is backwards, or that the (different) screen requires the signal to be the reverse of your original screen. As ejn63 said, just live with it, as it does work. You might want to check in the video Control Panel to see if any of the other functions work backwards.
