Broken LCD Display. Default output to VGA?
I have a Inspiron 1501 notebook with a broken LCD display. It is dark most of the time and flashes for a few seconds every one or two hours. Is it possible to make it output to VGA by default, without interactive configuration on the local machine (because I can’t see anything with the LCD display) - best if BIOS messages included. Remote configuration is acceptable for me, but I don't know whether remote access was enabled for the machine.
Please reply even if it must be done locally. This is very unpreferrable because I will need to need to borrow another notebook, open the case to replace the monitor.
I tried Fn-F8 but this does not direct the output to VGA. I am not sure whether this is because I haven’t logged in the OS (windows vista). Or this indicate that the display chip is dead, not the monitor?
I could stick with the windows vista on the notebook if necessary. But I won't mind if i need to install another OS.

If you get nothing using FN-F8, then there's something other than the LCD itself at fault.

From http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/p/2877825/3058991.aspx#3058991 , I found that when the lid was closed, the laptop might think the LCD display is not available and switch to VGA display. This worked so I could sometimes get the video signal from VGA.
The problem is in the 'might', 'sometimes' bit. Sometimes closing the lid cause the computer to go to sleep. And I can't work out the pattern -- when will it switch to VGA and when will it sleep.
Besides, this seems not work with the BIOS boot up screen (so called POST). I could get nothing displayed on VGA at any angle I tried the lid with...
The BIOS configuration screen would appear in VGA though. Too bad there seems no option for default display. Actually it even has no option for the amount of memory shared by display. So poor...
