C400, BIOS A11, boot from External USB CD drive?
Hello, I want to know if BIOS version A11 on a Latitude C400 can let me boot from a USB CD Player. The reason I want to do this is I put in an Admin password in Win XP Pro and it doesn't work. The solutions I found all involve booting from a CD, which I have not been able to do.
On my laptop, I have a BIOS Integrated Boot Application v4.32, but I have not found any help from it.
I think I read here that if I connect a series "C" CD drive to the laptop with an IDE cable, then I will be able to boot. Is that true, and what is a series "C" CD drive? My CD is a CDRW and is very recent, for what it's worth.
I tried all the boot options in the BIOS with no luck.
Anything will help. Thank you for reading my post,

Hi,
You cant boot from USB. Any " C " series CD will work with a 3G265 cable. A 10NRN is of no use. A " C " series drive is one from any Latitude " C " series, such as CPi, C600 or CPxH. http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=365&prevaction=category&previd=18&prevstart=75 Here is a link.

Hi Chris. I used the link you provided, but they say I need a 10NRN. What do you think? You have posted so much here you must know your stuff but on the other hand those guys sell it. Thanks.

Hi,
The 10NRN is for Lat. CS, LS, L400. The C400 used a 3G265. Google the number. Also, if you look at the port on the computer, there is a tab that will stop the wrong cable. The 3G265 has a notch for it. Maybe look for a regular with a C400 in their sig. and send them a PM. I know how you feel with conflicting info, but not all regulars are right, and not all sites have correct info either.

Theres a different cable that goes to the parallel port for floppy that doesnt work on the cdrom for the CSx Series.
The C400's I have seem to use 9G879 3G265 K2652 for the CD cable.

Hi,
There is more than one part number for the same cable. More than likely, it is because of different makers. If one has a bad batch, they can replace it with another brand. The cable is different on the C400, and looks as though they made it so you cant use a 10NRN. This may be as simple as with faster drives, they needed a cable with individual shields to prevent cross-talk. It may work in some cases, but I would use the one that came with the C400. It will work, and you wont be looking for strange int. faults.

The C400 cables have a rounded shape to them whereas the CS series cables are squared edges.
One problem with these cables and such is that its not a good idea to hot plug them.
On the LS if you do this it blows a chip in the screen and it goes all white.
Always change this when the unit is completely off.
