can you just not use the dock card? i belive its just a standard chip internal card, i have not tried it though on a 20" lcd, i would assume it runs it but it might not do 1600x1200.

I have a C840 with a dual PCI docking station and have only found two cards that will work with the system:
 
Matrox Graphics Millennium PCI
ATI Radeon 7500 PCI
 
I've tried other cards (Nvidia and ATI), but without luck.  The laptop gives a short blip complaint and shuts down.  I haven't seen any noticible degradation in performance with either of these cards, however the ATI has more memory (64MB) and has both, VGA and DVI, connectors.  You can run two montors off this single card.
Side Note: I personally know of 2 of these docking stations where the built in VGA port has went bad.

I have a CSx H500 with upgraded cpu and a BFG Geforce FX5200 seems to work.
