i have found a list on the net of compatible processors for the pm/gm 45 chipset but want to know what is the max the bios officially supports
As listed below
i was hoping to get a T9600 ,P9600 ,X7900 or Q9200 has any one upgraded to any of these successfully
sorry for the long list but some one might find it helpful as i definitively have
Socket P
Socket P supports some Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and associated Celerons based on Merom and Penryn cores. These chips were produced from 2007 to the present.
Sir your list saved me a lot of time. I have some information to add to this bank of knowledge.
I called Dell and after pushing them to let me talk to someone with real smarts, I got the information I wanted. The models of CPU's you posted work with the socket, however only core 2 duo t and p have been tested and put in dell 1737. So some people have gotten the q models to work, but they have lowered their battery life, and degraded performance on other areas. Mod away, but t and p core 2 duo are the models that will work for sure with bios and all.
You can pretty much scratch the X and Q CPUs off the list - they either draw too much power or won't be supported by the board, since they never shipped in this model.
I want to add to your post. I called dell tech support and got a real answer after begging to talk to a smart person. All core 2 duo models P and T are 100% tested and working for dell 1737. Other models in the list are not recommened, but might work, but there are performance issues that occur (heat, battery, life, etc). Someone put a quad core in and had power issues from the PSU. I am buying only a tested CPU.
Also they only put one type of GPU in this model just in case you are thinking of buying a different motherboard with a better GPU. :P
Hello, I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop it's a 1737, from what you guys have said here the t7800 is compatible yes? As I have got one, put it in my laptop and it states " no microcode update loaded for booting processor"
I believe there is an updated bios further then that. You are referring to a Intel core 2 duo? Because the quad versions might fit, but according to some information I begged Dell for, only the core 2 dou are compatible. PS I run the t9900 core 2 dou. I know for fact it wouldn't be worth the upgrade, but there is a core 2 duo t8xxx that is really cheap on eBay.
Thanks so much for your list, but I want to add some information I learned. According to your list these CPU's all match the socket size, however I wanted to know what was actually guaranteed compatible with bios as well as heat with the dell studio 1737. I spent 4 hours on the phone with dell trying to tall to someone, who knew what I meant. Here is the answer "the dell 1737 shipped with any version of the core 2 duo txxxx dual core versions." So in your list only the core 2 duo are guaranteed compatible.
Sorry yeah it's the intel core Duo t7800, which I thought was compatible so I was quite surprised when I came across the problem, so you reckon there are newer bios that run on my laptop, hhmmm I have tomorrow off of work I will have a bit of a look online and see if I can update it, will let u know how I get on, thanks for the info any more advice or help is greatly appreciated
just had a little look and it looks like the A09 are the newest BIOS for my model, so i might just be a bit screwed, more research will be done tomorrow though
i have had a good look today and as i feared, im screwed the bios, do not go higher than A09 on my model (the 1737) so looks like im going to have to send back the processor and just settle with the T6670 intel core duo, i will wait a couple of days before i buy it unless anyone has and suggestions?
I Have a studio 1737 with the ATI graphics a couple of thing to not about about the laptops
1. they have 3-4 variants of the mobos 3 with the intel graphics and the ATI model.
2. The intel model boards can support 8G ram and up to C2D T9900
3. The ATI model can take a C2Q with some work (i.e) using Copper Shims on the Chipsets as it will get very hot and also supports 8G ram
as i said i have the ATI board and i am running bios A09 which is the highest rev and C2D T9600 4 g ram with 128 ssd For OS and 500g hdd for storage. Hope this info is helpful

It should take most Core 2 Duo CPUs except for the Extreme Edition CPUs. The newer Core i series will not work.

It should work. Your other cpu must be dead.
