Can Dell find Service Tag by using Serial Number?

I bought an XPS 15 laptop at MicroCenter, put it into my trunk, and 10 minutes later someone broke into my car and stole it. All I have is the serial number (and police report) since I never opened it or looked at the box to get the service code. Is Dell able to provide me that information if I give them the serial number? Since I never turned on the computer to activate it, I was hoping Dell would let me know when and where the computer is activated from (or prevent that from happening) when whoever stole it turns it on, but from what read on the forums, I need the service tag, not serial number for Dell to track this. I'm hoping Dell keeps track of which serial number goes with which service tag?
