Can't access my external hard drive

I have Inspiron 5559 running Windows 10 Home.

When I insert my external hard drive it seems that it is recognized but when I try to access it it show me a message: "Unable to access E:\.  Access Denied ". What should I do in order to fix it?

Hi,

Is that system upgraded to Windows 10 or did you purchase it with Win10 already installed?  If it's an upgrade, I assume you were able to access the drive previously?

This issue seems to have to do with permissions in Windows 10.  Check out this thread where someone fixed access rights to an external drive in Win10.

If that doesn't work correctly for you please click on my Dell Todd username and send me a private message with the Dell Service Tag of your system to better help me troubleshoot.  Please keep all troubleshooting and discussions here in this public thread so that others can see what is done to resolve this issue.

Hello,

From what you sent me, you said that the external drive was working correctly up until a few weeks ago.  Did you run any Windows updates, or were there any automatically applied to your system?

You may want to restore Windows 10 back to a previous day and time (System Restore).  (see the first bullet point in the linked article).  It may be an update or some other change to your system that has affected the share settings on your system.

Also, did you look at the link I posted above on how someone fixed an issue similar to yours with an external drive?  Did you try what they posted in that article?
