Cannot find PORTS option on Device Manager
I have a two year old Inspiron E1505, Windows XP 2000, there is no option in my Device Manager for "PORTS". I am having problems trying to load HP adapted software for an old Office Jet T45. I get an error report saying No Communication with PC. In the download information I was told to check on Ports (COM & LPT). "If you see ECP Printer Port (LPT 1) listed under Ports, ECP mode is enabled." I don't have a Ports option to check on this. The software seems to load OK it just doesn't recognize the printer. I thought maybe the "ports" are not set properly? Thanks.

Try this and see if you get everything back. Before proceeding, disconnect anything connected to the USB Ports.
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
Now install the HP Office Jet drivers. You should be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

Sometimes the USB Ports have a problem. This fixes the problem.
