Well I"m trying to connect the hard drive by fire wire because it freezes often when in constant use, like when burning cd or dvd from info on that drive, or when accessing the drive to quickly or alot. This happened when it was connected by usb 2.0. So now I'm trying firewire. When I connect it sort freezes, once I got device manager to show the hard drive name, but still don't know how to access it, would it show up auto. in my computer. I might need a new one, its the Lacie D2 Big disk 500gb. It doesn't need another drivers according to lacie's website. What do you think? Thanks.
If I remember correctly, the fire wire is slower than USB 2.
I have a 300GB Maxtor and use the Retrospect software to back up with. Guess what, when I try and view the files backed up I get an error and the explorer program shuts down and sends an error report to MS.
I'll try to put the same files on it tomorrow with out using retrospect. Maybe there is just a problem with big USB drives. I hope not though, I ordered the WD 320GB from Buy.com while it had the rebate. It says it comes with the same Retrospect software.
Anyway, getting back to your drive. When it "freezes" are you getting an error and program closing or...? I use Right click on Start / Explore to see my drive. It shows up ok with all the 2G's or so of files but I can not open a photo without the error. Nuts. Does that sound familiar or is your a different problem.
I was wondering if the transfer rate will be steady enough to burn from the USB drive.
Do you have other heavy users of the same USB port (on a hub) active when it freezes? I have mine in it's own port.
I checked out other forums, people said that large external hard drives screw up easily, I was rec. to use an internal hd with an enclosure.
My hd used to say drive X did not save properly in the lower left hand corner, then why I tried to access it in anyway poss. it would freeze the window, not responding error. I think is just burned out. My hd is connected only to my pc, no one elses. So it's a diff. prob. then yours. And I don't use any software for it, just for click and drag, storing large files.
Well i fig. out how to connect and make work a fire wire hd, but now when I connect in device manager it gives a grayed out sign of the hd (so it recognizes it) with an x, then I can't enable it. Firewire is slower, somewhat b/c usb 2.0 has varible speeds, its peak it higher, but fire wire is more stable, that's why I wanted to try it with firewire.
Oh and you said u bought another external, for how much.
The Western Digital had a rebate that brought it down just under $200. for a 320GB. It has not shipped yet though. It shows it has been sent to shipping on my buy.com page. They are usualy fairly quick so there must have been a lot of sales on them.
The Maxtor 300GB is going for $235.at our Costco.
I'm trying out the Maxtor tonight. I wanted to give it plenty of time to use the auto save. I'm about ready to uninstal the software for it. I think I messed up the save before by having my system go to sleep after 4 hours. My guess anyway. The poor thing keeps checking and updating file changes.

Check the hardware manager. Does it need a differant driver instal? Is it powered by AC and not the USB?
Just some thoughts...
